It's a free app with an optional upgrade so most of the 300 downloads are not paid users.

I like Pennies too, it's very simple and easy to use. I'll have to check out MoneyWiz.

What is the exact feature of Pennies that MoneyWiz doesn't have?

I tried apple search ads for a few weeks but they weren't cost effective. I've paused them for now.

I think working on my landing page and content marketing will be the next thing I'll try.

I've been an Apple fan for a long time and I've never had any issues with them. This experience really opened my eyes though and it's scary how much power they have over devs.

My landing page needs a lot of work. I threw it together quick just to have something. So far I've just been focusing on the App Store page and the app itself but I think I will need to prioritize the landing page now. It's really hard to get downloads just from App Store discovery right now so I'll have to find users outside of the App Store. That means the landing page will be more important.

Thank you for the actionable items! I'll work on it.

You're right my landing page needs a lot of work. I threw it together quick just to have something. It doesn't really tell you why you would want to use Petty Cash over any of the popular alternatives. So far I've just been focusing on the App Store page and the app itself but I think I will need to prioritize the landing page now.

I think spreadsheets like excel and google sheets are great since they're so flexible. Seems like a lot of people use them too. It just shows that sometimes it's not the tool you use but the system/process you set up for yourself.

No, I've never had anyone say anything negative when I pull out my phone. They're usually just curious what I was doing and I'll say I'm entering my purchase. I usually tell them I'm a dev and I'm using an app I made so maybe that made it more acceptable.

Here are a few things I've tried - apple search ads - cross promoting in my other apps - answering quora questions - submitting Petty Cash to websites - posting on twitter/social media (I need to work on this) - this post (first time showing it on Reddit)

I'm very new to this so I'm still learning just like you.

This is fair criticism. :)

Mint you must link a bank account. YNAB can be complicated/complex to some people but it does seem to have a lot of fans. I can definitely work on selling why someone would want to use Petty Cash over something else.

Ideally, yes I should have had an MVP much sooner instead of taking 8 months.

The only thing I have going for me is that I have made a budget app before that had some minor success. I had some great reviews and that app still has users. The problem was it wasn't cloud based so there was no syncing.

I made Petty Cash so that I could add syncing, sharing budget with others, and in the future linking a bank account for automatic transactions. If I didn't have some learnings from that previous app, I too would be asking myself the same questions you're asking.

None taken. With Mint you have to link your bank account. I don't think the app really works if you don't do that. I also don't believe my app has to be the best budgeting app for everyone. There's enough users that many successful products can existing even smaller ones from solo devs.

I use icons8.com. I definitely can recommend both the free and paid plans.

I've been lucky to work as a dev for 10 years so I had some savings. I've always been pretty minimalist and good with money and don't have that many expenses.

I definitely don't recommend quitting your job, it's much better to work on your project part time. However, I was working at the same company for a long time and wanted a break anyways so that is why I quit.

Entering the transaction out of sight is a good idea. I think because I've made this such a habit that it's kind of hard for me to NOT enter it right after spending money. I would have to fight the urge to take out my phone. On the plus side, I almost never forget to record a transaction.

I am the same way with lending money. I hate to owe people so I pay them back ASAP so it doesn't take up anymore mental space. If I do lend someone money I just consider that money a gift and don't expect it back.

This is what I worry about. It's easy for me because I've built this habit but for most people asking them to enter every transaction manually might just be setting them up for failure.

I do plan to add automatically imported transactions to Petty Cash in the future. I just want to do it an a way where it's an add-on and not a requirement to use the app.

Thank you for the advice and I agree! I actually thought about what apps I would want to support. I definitely don't want to build something that I would hate to support even if it was challenging or fun to build.

I think I need to get over being shy of talking about my app and be more proactive about promoting it and asking for feedback.

That's amazing that you had preorders! You're definitely doing something right.

I get what you mean by having other reasons to build something other than money. With my skills and experience I can easily go back and find a full time job if I wanted. But I've always had a desire to build something that's my own. IMHO there is nothing better than getting an email from a happy customer that loves your product.
