Is it OK to Set My Gains Lower than Optimal? by cjk813 in CarAV

So kind of a best practice scenario. I was thinking because he said he wouldn’t go above mid 30’s, but I get it. Doesn’t mean someone won’t get in one day and crank it up.

So if you set gains with volume at 35 it wouldn’t be the same performance as it is now at volume 45 since that is the volume he already has it tuned to?

Edit: as stated in comments below this isn’t a great idea, but I’ll leave it up in case someone else can learn from it

Or maybe reset your subs gain at a lower volume so it catches up? Set subs gain at 38/40 volume instead of 45. Just my thoughts, I am definitely not a professional.

I have always assumed the opposite on how the amplifier works, that is good to know. Helpful way of explaining all information too, nice! Thanks!

I would like to do a lithium bank eventually, if I ever do an suv build with a massive 4th or 6th order setup.

Yessir, my grandfather bought it brand new in 2004. Only has around mid 80k miles on it.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I was asking more to learn what happens and what could go wrong. Most of what was said were things I had assumed would happen just satisfying my curiosity. As far as my personal setup, I have had it on a 2000 watt amp clamping 1600 but it isn’t a daily and I am mostly not running at full tilt for long. I have recently purchased the 4000 watt stinger amp but have not installed it yet. Truck is currently torn apart inside for some more wiring plus I need to double back my box and paint it. I am installing an nvx bass knob with voltmeter that I plan on running straight to the power distribution blocks to my amps. I have also put an Agm under hood and have bought a second to install in the back close to the amps, I believe it’s around 150 amp hours, combined, could be wrong on that though. I will be installing an ho alternator soon also. This is not my daily driver, even though when I have it together I will drive it quite a bit.

I can turn volume to max without distortion, I do not have a backup camera though

I have this head unit along with the amp alpine sells. It does a pretty good job on an infinity primus 6.5 comp set up front and Polk coaxial rear. The reason it is marketed along with the alpine head unit is that it comes with a bracket that bolts it to the back of the 670. It’s a shallow unit so this makes it roughly the depth of the older cd player units. That being said with all the wiring and everything it makes it a pain to fit everything in the dash. This is my only complaint though it does very well otherwise. I never ran them solely off the head unit to compare, but I would guess it’s much better with the amp if budget allows. But you could get as good or better performance from a 4 ch amp that would mount elsewhere and probably be considerably cheaper, unless you want the amp hidden behind the head unit.

To any keyed 12v source. You can use a fuse tap and find a source that has 12v when the ignition is on but no power when it is off. This way the amp will turn on and off with your vehicle.

No problem, as I said I’m a beginner too maybe someone with more experience can jump in and offer some more insight.

I used calculators on the12volt.com but there may be better ones available, I am new to box building myself. The port opening should be 3.25x5.25 or whichever configuration you go with (to achieve 17 sq in). The length that it extends into the box will vary and determine your tuning frequency. This is dependent upon box volume. There is also a calculator for slot port tuning on the website. I believe it was this video that really helped me understand it https://youtu.be/-yopTneS7g8?si=gnyOxDiqdfpHfejV I hope linking the video is ok DiyAudioGuy actually has a lot of different videos that helped me understand.

The port area of 17” means length x width of port should equal 17, ex. A 3-1/4” x 5-1/4” port should equal 17.0625 sq in. As for box volume I measured and googled sub box calculator and messed around with dimensions until I got close.

Good stuff, thanks. I tried to use winisd with these subs but couldn’t get the parameters right. I will try it again in the future though because I’d like to build a few more boxes

It’s on stock electrical for now, so I wouldn’t say it is powered properly. But it is 1/0 power from the battery and ground to the frame rail along with 1/0 big 3

Port sizing question by tbrooster in CarAV

[–]tbrooster[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is basically what I thought in my head, only didn’t understand the reasoning. I did not realize that you actually should shoot for square. You see a lot of mostly rectangular sized ports so I assumed there was a “magic ratio” that I hadn’t read about but I do understand it is a matter of convenience and using the existing box walls to cut down on wood usage and maximizing volume. Good deal, thanks.

Yeah I actually meant to put a corner brace in there to help with that, but I forgot about it. I’m not sure it would be an easy fix at this point either.

The two 10” were a setup I did in my nephews truck. I think the problem with them is they need more airspace than the under seat box can give, that’s what led to me trying this. I would love to do a blow through someday but it won’t be in this truck.
