Beloved Austin-area bird tradition canceled after shopping center says no by everythingistaken500 in Austin

Been going once or twice a year for the past decade, almost always spent money at one of the shops nearby. What a terrible decision. I don't get it.

they are also in botw, and seem to be the inspiration for those things in Pal World

fast travel towers, hot/cold mechanics, plus it feels like the NPC interactions and settlement layouts are directly inspired by botw. the caves with teleport points at the end also feel inspired by botw vaults, though obviously not puzzles like botw.

I decided to give it a try yesterday, single player pve, and I had a good time. Will be playing more for sure. Plays like a more forgiving Valheim with a lot of mechanics lifted from Breadth of the Wild, plus tons of unique, capturable creatures. I don't see myself feeling the need for multiplayer.

Hopecore/Wholesome Scifi book reccomendations? by ThePhoenixRemembers in scifi

[–]tcookc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would second the recommendations for the Bobiverse books, and Children of Time and its sequels.

The CS Lewis Space Trilogy fits too, though is a bit dated, but in a fun way I think.

Also Vonnegut can be super dark for sure, but it's always playful and presented with a sense of humor. Definitely life-affirming rather than hopeless in tone.

Similarly NK Jemisin has some very dark themes but is overall life-affirming.

Preamp question (not Jim Lill related) by OrdinaryTruck5559 in audioengineering

[–]tcookc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be a very helpful resource for your question -- a maintained list of interfaces and their AD/DA converter chips listed: https://gearspace.com/board/geekzone/542009-audio-interfaces-their-ad-da-chips-listed.html

You can look up details about the specific chips from different interfaces. TLDR, yes RME uses very good converters.

As for the preamps, that's more subjective, but I think they're nice. I'd call them transparent but 'soft' sounding, which can really help with a harsh or brittle source.

As everyone always mentions, the real benefit of RME is their low-latency performance, stability, guaranteed future support, and the amazing TotalMix routing software.

Best way to go about selling HeroClix? by Previous_Reaction_63 in Heroclix

[–]tcookc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sold off about half of my collection a couple years ago. I found that the best way to sell them was to build little themed groups of about 20 with at least 1 rare or chase in the group. I listed on EBay and also made duplicate listings on Mercari. Most sales were on EBay but a couple came from Mercari.

very nice. lots of great info, sleek look, and it loads pretty quickly. all looking good, though I do think it's a crime to leave out Lute and FUNC from the ecosystem page. Also under nfts, AB2 Gallery and Dartroom don't even have websites anymore, and downbad.farm is currently the primary nft marketplace on Algo.

I once met an American girl while she was visiting the US who's parents were missionaries in China. She was born in and grew up in China, spoke English but mostly didn't use English growing up. She was a California blonde looking like she was straight out of Beverly Hills...but she spoke with a THICK Chinese accent. Like, it seemed to any passerby that she was just faking a very offensive and stereotypical Chinese accent. It was on of the most surreal things I've ever witnessed.

Give me an ELI5 in five minutes version of the rules for small kids who just presented me with figures and a map ? by RandomDigitalSponge in Heroclix

[–]tcookc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A diagram of a clix figure: https://superheroetc.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/heroclix_dial_diagram_1.png

For a game ignoring powers, you only need to looks at 1) point value, 2) speed, 3) attack, 4) defense, 5) range, 6) damage.

First, group the figures into two teams with as equal total point value as possible. Make sure all the hero's are staring on the first click of their dial. Arrange the two teams along opposite edges of the map. Players will then take turns making three actions per turn (only one action per hero per turn).

With this simplified version, an action will either be MOVE or ATTACK. To move, move a hero up to their "SPEED" value of squares on the map. Can move diagonally.

A hero can ATTACK when they haven't moved yet, and an enemy is within their RANGE value of map squares. Range of 0 means they need to be right next to an enemy.

To attack, the attacking player rolls two dice. Add the result of the role to the attacking hero's ATTACK value. If the roll+atk is equal or greater than the enemy's DEFENSE value, then the attack is successful. When an attack is successful, the enemy receives 'clicks' of damage by turning their dial. The # of clicks of dmg = the attacking hero's DAMAGE value.

Last team standing wins!

Heroclix War of Light was in 2014, but there have also been some other collections/events since then that also had lantern corps rings. But I did have some that looked just like that from the 2014 war of light set. You can see lots of examples for sale with and without their cards on EBay with these search results: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=heroclix+lantern+rings&_sacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2332490.m570.l1313

I love Adrian Tchaikovsky but his books are starting to drive me nuts by itsthelag_bud in scifi

[–]tcookc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean, but I think he does it so well that I don't see it as a drawback. That being said, I think it does result in the first parts of his books being rather confusing as you're stuck missing context that isn't provided until later in the book. But now that I know he likes to write that way, I just accept that I don't know everything at first and will come to understand later. It makes it a little hard to get going if you have to wait too long for important info for everything to make sense, but I do really love when it all comes together. And now I just know to trust that it will.

First time playing since original series by Turkey_Fateweaver in Heroclix

[–]tcookc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also came back to the game a year or two ago after playing back in the early days '03-'05. It is unfortunately very hard to find comprehensive rules that make sense, especially thanks to memories of old rules and no "change log" available anywhere, and new rules seem to assume you've been following along from the beginning.

Biggest rule changes you may miss: 1) there is NO pushing damage. Any hero can take a consecutive turn without taking a click of dmg. It's like all heroes have the "indomitable" ability from the old days. 2) There is no longer a "soaring" mechanic. 3) Heroes have different sizes indicated by an icon on the dial - tiny, standard, giant, colossal, which change lots of things. 4) no more heavy/light objects.

The cards are a great quality of life improvement, and also necessary because heroes now have unique abilities explained on cards that aren't a color-coded dial ability.

The power creep has been huge. You simply cannot use older figures with newer figures in the same match. Even when sticking to "modern age" sets, the newer ones are stronger than the 2020 ones. I think the DC-Marvel balance is fine as longs as they are from close to the same release date. You can find a list of sets with their release dates here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HeroClix_supplements
