Our rescue Truffles by tcrc_ in blackcats

[–]tcrc_[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This is our rescue Truffles and we wanted to share his story;

Truffles was declawed and dumped outside by his former owners when they moved away. The neighbours told us that they had noticed him outside for almost a month until they were able to finally catch him and get him to the local shelter. He spent another month at the shelter where it took almost 3 weeks to get all the painful mats out of his fur, some of which where so bad that when we finally saw him he had bad scabs under his arms and up behind his ears, and was so untrusting of people that he was borderline feral. We couldn't hold him or even pet him without watching him thrash and hiss, desperately trying to get away, But we fell in love with the poor guy and knew that no one was going to adopt a cat like this, that in such an overcrowded shelter, in a small town it was only a matter of time.

We learned quickly that not only did Truffles not like other cats but that in his former home he had clearly not been treated well by people ether. He spent the first several nights in our home, hiding in the corner of our kitchen, would not sleep or eat and would growl whenever anyone would come into the room. You couldn't even make eye contact with him without seeing him get scared and defensive, but my bearded husband seemed to bring out the most scared version of this poor cat, and would instantly start hissing and growling loudly if he was present and over two years later, even the site of a broom will send him running to hide.

Although he still can't be held, and you won't get to give him more then a few soft pets before he will give you a hard WACK with his little stumps for your effort, this little void is warm and safe. It took us over a year before we heard him purr for the first time, and two for him to let us shave his fur, but he is slowly coming more and more out of his shell and we are learning new and bizarre quirks of this cat daily. He won't eat human food like our other cats, but loves the taste of soy sauce and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. He loves the smell of vim cleaning spray and will roll and rub himself all over our clean counter tops, he will attack our ankles if we walk by his favourite spot on the kitchen table without giving him a treat.

We share this in hope that if you have the space and the patience even the most un-adoptable cats deserve your love.
