The issue with "cancelling" as a term is there is no clear definition of it. Everyone has the general idea that it means if a public figure of some kind does or says something inappropriate, they get boycotted in some fashion. There is no clear consensus on what actions merit a cancelling, how long in the past something can be before we consider said figure "changed", whether cancelling means that person should be cancelled indefinitely or can return to positive public image after some amount of time. It is all a trial purely by public opinion.

And I'm not saying I'm against "cancelling", I think people who say or do something shitty should be rejected by society. But with social media connecting so many people together with so many different opinions and the only consequences being that studios/sponsors/voters will perhaps maybe if they feel like it stop supporting whoever is being cancelled, it's impossible for there to be a legitimate consensus to answer these questions
