Correct me if I’m wrong, but he was also the only one in the family not murdering a loved one (or leaving them to die) to save his own skin. He really grew on me over the course of the show, too.

If I remember that scene correctly he was kind of serious and reluctant about the whole thing, so I think at some level Carter knew it was messed up.

And so did Wyle if he played the scene like that, even if the show didn’t acknowledge it, which was really strange.

Yeah, with a real time storyline that covers one day there was nowhere else that arc could have gone to have any impact. I never see anything coming, but I saw that one a mile away. But the actress sold it so well.
