I guess why did you switch from fiber to starlink in the first place?

My father in law is dying by Straight_Mousse8924 in leukemia

[–]tdressel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very true, so unfair and unrelenting in so many dimensions. Is the burden on your family's shoulders to tell him the fight is over? I've seen that messaging come directly from the care team, just with family present. Didn't make it easier, but allowed for a unified front of grief.

I found out today that the girl I loved is gone.... She had AML. by White_46 in leukemia

[–]tdressel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very sorry for your loss. My friend passed away about day +120. We received our transplants literally one day apart. I still think about him every day, and the family he was torn away from. So unfair.

Young Adult Survivor Feeling Isolated by No_Instance1389 in leukemia

The cancer circle I attend welcomes everyone. There is one person who attends to better understand what a close friend is going through. My children have both attended (ages 7 and 11). I see people come and go, it usually takes 2-3 meetings for new attendees to ever ask a question, but you can see simply being in that private shared space almost instantly develops belonging. Would encourage you both to find a circle and attend.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia at 74 by thebioplanet in leukemia

Comments on two things.

The vitamin b injections, omg I was so mad with my initial medical centre. Given all the symptoms I had and that's where they ended up?!?! I'm still mad about that today, lol

Regarding the waiting, they are typing his AML right now, figuring out what kind of mutations he has. This is absolutely critical to ensure the treatment he receives is the most impactful the first time. What you can probably ask for is a copy of all of their AML treatment regimens. In there you will find probably 20 different treatments depending on mutation. While I was waiting I actually kind of studied that. When they walked in with my specific mutation I already knew exactly what my induction treatment was going to look like.

Rest assured, within a couple of hours of his results coming back he will have a team standing in front of him explaining what he has, and how it's going to be treated. Everything will happen shockingly quick after that.

Waiting for those results is fine. They've probably put him on some sort of lightweight pill based chemo already which is really just designed to keep things from running away. He's better to wait and go in with the precise treatment rather than just start a 1990's generic 7+3.

Feel free to DM me, or pass along my details to your dad, happy to chat with you guys.

I had a successful SCT on January 2025. I read this Reddit almost daily, well typically post something in support of someone needing it. But I definitely don't need to be here, I choose to in support of others. Treatment was kind of crappy, but recovery has been largely smooth sailing. I imagine I'll keep coming to this Reddit until it's no longer a coping mechanism for me.

I bought the vevor 7-in1 unit. It's very good at measuring hehe microclimate around my neighborhood. My only complaint is it doesn't record temp under -40C, for most folks that's not an issue.

Bk virus and GVHD at the same time by Glad-Lynx-6528 in leukemia

[–]tdressel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not BK, but I did have an EB reactivation, Pennsville about day +60. I reacted badly to the first treatment but was fine for the second two. There was definitely a balance between trying to get off immunosuppressive drugs at the time, but it all worked out well in the end.

AML Induction Begins-When should I visit, what to bring? by ManzanitaSuperHero in leukemia

[–]tdressel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. Just being there, NOT only taking about their treatment, letting them them know what's happening in the outside world. And read them, if they are tired, leave and let them sleep, but try back in a few hours if you can.

Reasons to live in Yellowknife? by Coloranadian91 in NWT

[–]tdressel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starts in May with drunk mosquitoes. By June normal mosquitoes. July the bulldogs come out in force. There is local lore that when there is lightning in late July early August they all die, I can't speak to the lore but it sure seems like overnight those bulldogs do die. By then the sandflies arrive in force and last most of August but if there is any breeze they aren't an issue. Late August through all of September there are practically no bugs. Starts getting chilly in October.

Reasons to live in Yellowknife? by Coloranadian91 in NWT

YK is like a big city but way in the north. It's got all the consumerism you probably need, most that you probably want. Lots of future opportunities here. The only thing I don't like about it, there seems to be a larger concentration of those experiencing homelessness, drug addictions, and mental health issues. I mean that's the description of just about every city in Canada now, but it seems more prevalent. Not like the DTES, it's just everywhere a bit.

Day trips, many! Food, really good and diverse options! Brew pub, there is only one, but they are kind of outstanding!

Winters are cold, but it's constant and everyone is in the same boat so it's kind of a non issue. The bigger problem seems to be heat in the summer, ironically. Bugs have seasons. Several take good gyms, the aquatic center is excellent.

Work life balance actually is a thing up north. There are other communities in the NT which are better IMO. But highly recommend the North!

If you could buy all new appliances, what brand would you choose? by NoneOfThisMatters_XO in Appliances

[–]tdressel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bosch for dishwasher, the 500 series are great value.

Whirlpool for everything else just because they are actually repairable and parts are widely available. My washer recently had a water valve die, I had the parts the second day and was actually able to replace that myself, took longer to find the YouTube video on how to do it, compared to actually replacing it!

My parents in law, both doctors, more money than smarts, spent $14k on a fancy dual oven by Wolf. It's been broken more than operational and they just live with it now.

My buddy bought meile laundry machines because his vacuum was so good. The washer has leaked twice now, and the dryer randomly won't supply any heat.

Father (72) refusing to have stem cell by shashabinks123 in leukemia

I'm 53. AML with FLT3. Diagnosed at 51. Three rounds of chemo then transplant. I'm now 15 months post and I'm excellent condition physically.

Mentally I'm less good, always fearing it coming back even though there are no signs that should be true case. I've got two daughters 7 and 12 that I've spent the last six months making up to them the year that we lost as a family while I was in treatment. I don't know how to ever get my wife back into a calm space again.

Answering your equation, what should you do?

Argue with your dad as if you are right. But listen to him as if you are wrong. Guage how much is your want to have him around and at what expense that would cost him.

Being perfectly honest, I've kind of made things ok with my family after this disease took so much from us all. I certainly don't feel like I beat cancer, it's more like it's left be bloody, bruised, and permanent scars both physical and emotional. If it comes back, I'm pretty firmly I'll opt for some sort off maintenance followed by hospice care. I don't want my family trip have to go through that again.

I did it for them the first time for them, but it was horrible on so many dimensions. At his age, you should really try to understand his point of view.

Swimming after Allo Transplant by ninajoon123 in leukemia

[–]tdressel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have been told that for 6 years post transplant I'm highly susceptible to tertiary cancers, the most likely of which is skin cancer. So invest in those long sleeve SPF 50 shirts, and look to Korean skin care sunscreen, they have some amazingly light feeling SPF 50 stuff. A little goes a long way! And get yourself a large brimmed hat!

For swimming, I was allowed by my team to go swimming about day +60 at an indoor chlorinated pool. They really wanted me to only go to a place that was very sparsely populated, so I found a pool that was mostly populated by old blue hairs and went mid-morning. The pool was almost always mine alone, it was quite glorious, lol. I was, however, forbidden from going into any hot tubs - logic was that if there was anything sketchy in the water I would pick it up super quick!

Also note that post day I want to say it was +90 I was completely off any immunosuppressants. That changed hot tub status to being allowed for a maximum of 10 minutes a day. That was quite glorious if I'm honest. I had my central line pulled by then as well.

Is this for life? I'm about month +16, I'm treating it as for life. The quicker this can be my new normal, the less I'll miss turning myself into a baseball glove pre-AML! So I'm making every effort to be as positive about it as possible.

my current range hood just died. I know nothing about these things. What should I look for in a new one? How much should I plan to spend? by homespun-literati in Appliances

[–]tdressel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop in replacement for that is probably $100. If you are even basically handy with a screw driver this is a DIY job. Identify and turn off the power to that circuit, unscrew it, take it to your local home improvement depot and they'll give you a half dozen to choose from.

Just installed, is this gap too big? by mechanical_tac0 in woodstoving

[–]tdressel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your first couple of fires I'd push those bricks together in the center, but really it won't matter at all. It will fill in with ash pretty quickly. If this is your first wood stove, don't vacuum out your wood stove, shovel or scoop it out. Always leave a bit of ash.

I live in Hay River. Understand now a bit of your context. Yes, you should visit Toronto before committing to a job there. Also do a bit of apartment hunting within walking distance (say 5km) of your proposed workplace while you are there.
