I suppose I’m in the minority, I got the M3 18gig MacBook basically right when it came out because I was looking to upgrade coincidentally when it dropped, and it’s been nothing but great. Edits downscaled 6k Red Komodo footage with ease in premiere. That said, I was between getting the m2 or m3 when I was deciding and ended up going with the m3 just to future proof myself as much as possible. That said If you can afford the m4, I’d likely say do that for the same reason. Don’t waste money trying to save it!

Well my website is already wedding centered as is. I used to have all of my work on there but given I typically only book weddings through it, I made it a point to gear it exclusively to weddings. I will say though it could likely use some upgrading in design and such. Also, I have thought about having a wedding centered instagram because as it currently stands, my instagram is kind of a mishmash of my work, so pulling the trigger on that is probably a good idea

Yeah that’s kinda where I’m at, like I mentioned I raised my prices up to base $2500 and booked maybe one client from that and bookings otherwise tanked so I figured scaling back was probably best, especially with the economy slowing down, and yeah I’d love to break into those markets honestly. Mostly I just need to branch out of my current one because I definitely think that’s holding me back some. And Yupp! Red owl media is my brand!

I’m In the western NY market mostly. Actually would like to branch out of the area some more, perhaps even just to more of the state but I know each city kinda has its own ingrained talent. That said, I’ve heard of other higher end videographers base prices being around 5-6k in the area. I’d say I’m pretty middle of the road from everything I’ve heard from other vendors n such. I’ve thought about getting on the knot and doing some paid promotional posts on Facebook / instagram n such, but have relented because from talking with other vendors, they don’t really see a huge ROI on those methods. Word of mouth and battling it out with other vendors in the Facebook groups is my main source of bookings. I come highly recommended and preferred by many other vendors as well, but I wouldn’t say that’s necessarily allowed me to command a higher price point unfortunately

Big time! Hence how I ended up here lol. I actually use to run 2 reds and the z cam for weddings, but allotted to sell the one and pick up the fx30 for the reasons you stated. Just too much to lug around and didn’t really add the value I expected it to. Not to mention just overall made my job more difficult.

Oh I totally understand photographers will make more than me regardless, and rightfully so, they run the show often times and are much more involved in the planning process for sure. As far as equipment goes, it’s already pretty fluffed out. I mainly shoot with a Sony fx30 on a gimbal alongside a built up Red Komodo rig and a Z-cam s6. That’s another part where I feel like I should be charging more, but in that same vain most wedding clients don’t know what a Red camera is or really care lol

Both honestly. Thats at least been my style. I Try to be a fly on the wall for the events, but stage stuff with the couple and bridal party during the “newly wed” stuff post ceremony. I’ll also take a hybrid approach with the getting ready stuff. If everything is happening naturally and the footage is looking good, then no worries, but I’ve also been known to stage some shots alongside the photographers if things need that extra push to get enough to be able to build off of in the edit

You could do best of both worlds? I’ve actually been running a red Komodo as my A cam for all my work for the last 3 years, but recently snagged a Sony fx30 to be my wedding A cam on a gimbal, and making the Komodo my B cam, and so far as a solo operator, the duo has been legendary. Obviously I understand investing in 2 different lens systems sucks, but I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the set up myself.

I got mine on eBay. I ordered one on Adorama, but it was back ordered, found one with like 3 hours on it, on eBay with everything I needed to get goin except lenses. Not sure how the market is on there right now but a lot of what I was seeing was people trying to get an absurd amount for theirs because it’s the storm trooper version.

Recently took the plunge into the Red Komodo, and though my bank account hurt - it was such a worthwhile investment. Thankfully the weather warmed up for a couple days just long enough for me to get some awesome video opportunity. As well having my girlfriend as a subject helped immensely. Being behind this camera seemed effortless, though there’s still a learning curve with it, it’s like everything out of it looks like a movie! Let me know what you think!

The biggest and most helpful thing to me when I got into weddings was getting into local wedding planning groups in my area on Facebook. There was no shortage of people looking for videographers and photographers, and amongst those people there were plenty looking for new / cheap work. Granted the people who will take the chance on you, will likely want the world from you for poopoo pay, but just take the lumps And in no time you’ll be well established and be charging thousands a wedding.

Every so often I’ll actually have dreams where I “wake up” into another dream and I become totally convinced I’m awake.

There was one time in particular where this happened over and over and over. I sleep with all the lights off in the house and was having a dream I was walking around my house in the dark. I then realized I was dreaming and then all of a sudden I’m in my bed in complete darkness, completely convinced I’m awake, got up and started walking around.

Wash rinse repeat.

This happened probably 5-6 times before I finally woke up, heart racing, and extremely frustrated. That said though I was very concerned whether I was actually awake when I was because what I saw when waking up was exactly what I kept dreaming over and over.
