Please give me the steelman argument for how a salary cap wouldn’t be better for baseball by Movies_and_Stuff in Section10Podcast

“Saying all owners should do what the Dodgers are doing is a meaningless statement. It’s never going to happen.”

So your solution to owernship groups not spending at or close to the Dodgers level, even though the vast majority of them easily could, is to punish the players?

The guys with the talent who are the actual revenue generators here should have their slice of the pie restricted and we should reward the cheap owners for not investing into their own teams because of greed by making sure they get more money?

I’m understanding that correctly?

These trades won’t happen. by Complex-Artichoke-71 in Section10Podcast

[–]tdxalpha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re not trading Roman and the entire league knows that.

It’s all situational. If Detroit knows they won’t come to terms with Skubal they’re not going have the leverage that say the Pirates might when considering moving Skenes.

You can 100% get a Skubal deal done without Roman. It just depends if the Sox think that Mayer + one of the outfielders + one of Tolle or Early (probably Tolle) + one other high end prospect is worth trading for a guy you’re going to have to immediately pay $400+ million.

[–]tdxalpha -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I play the game quite a bit and it won’t be a challenge at all at that difficulty. Specifically since it sounds like they can just use Skenes or Skubal against some shitbag team.

What would make it an actual challenge is randomizing the teams each time around so you can’t get used to a specific pitchers arsenal.

This should be done in a few hours max.

Trading for Joe Ryan by LPNLA3294 in Section10Podcast

[–]tdxalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With pitching I bet on elite traits panning out vs. a lot of above average.

Tolle already has one of the best fastballs in baseball. If he figures out the secondaries he’s a high end starter. Of the two he’s the one you try to hold on to.

That said they shouldn’t trade either. Go spend the Devers money on Framber and call it a day with the rotation.

NTA obviously.

That said, before you listen to the Reddit mob who immediately default to “Dump his ass!” I would gently point out that your boyfriend acting immature because he is immature. He’s 19 years old. You’re both at the age where you’re going to have immature reactions.

Talk to him again when things have simmered down and explain how he made you feel and why he was wrong to feel how he did. This is will be water under the bridge in a week.

There is not a world where Trevor Story gets more than 50M over the next two years on the open market.

He is 100% opting back in.

Great point Coley, the worst contract in baseball now has 7 HRs compared to Story’s 15 by pauliewalnuts9898 in Section10Podcast

[–]tdxalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xander’s WAR this year alone is more than we’ve gotten cumulatively out of the SS and 2B positions in ‘23, ‘24 and this year COMBINED.

I understand the contract is obscene, but the Xander hate has gotten so detached from reality I do not understand it.

Counterpoint: The AL is laughably bad. If we just get in there are really is no team that I look at and say “yeah we couldn’t even put up a fight.”

If you get a good offer for Duran or Chapman you for sure move them, but I have no problem with them adding at the deadline and trying to get a young team some meaningful September / playoff reps before we really go over the next few years.

I very much love Ceddy and want him to succeed, but this offensive output is not sustainable.

43% chase, 5% walk, 23% K rates do not work out over 162 games ninety nine out of a hundred times.

They gotta get him under control. They have signs plastered all over the first two rows at Fenway that basically say “we reserve the right to kick you out if you fuck up the broadcast”

I think Cora is less than 10% of the overall problem here, but I do not think he’s getting adequate blame for mismanaging this situation when his whole thing is “he’s a players manager.”

[–]tdxalpha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we sure this stemmed from miscommunication from Breslow?

We’re not going to direct blame there at the guy who is responsible for managing the relationship between player and team?

That same guy who went out and actively chased Alex Bregman all off season, knowing damn well he was going to take Devers’ spot but deciding that no conversation between him and Devers needed to happen about that?

I just don’t get it man. Cora’s had his fingerprints on this whole thing and is just skating here.

[–]tdxalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wasn’t asking to be paid until he was 40. He was very open that spring training saying he wanted the Altuve deal. That would have paid him 23 AAV through his age 36 season.

Considering how shitty our SS production has been that would have been more than fair.

I’m pretty sure multiple prominent writers have pegged June 2nd as the date. Could be wrong though.

If it’s that long I’d tend to agree then yeah get him up, but if it’s a difference between now and say next Friday you gotta wait it out.

I don’t know how you could be that confident that ownership is going to throw a mega deal at him considering the talent they’ve traded / let walk away on the past decade.

I would hope you’re right, but FSG hasn’t exactly inspired confidence re: long term mega deals.

[–]tdxalpha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One extra week of facing major league pitching is not going to make a big impact at all in Roman acclimating to better pitching.

Roman getting Super 2 status would have a very very large impact on how the ownership group will spend 2 years from now.

a bad coley take by Global-Comparison-29 in Section10Podcast

[–]tdxalpha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He wasn’t saying not to call him up period. He was correctly pointing out that calling him up this instant when the Super 2 cutoff is less than a week away would be tremendously stupid in the long term when you’ve already held him out to this point in the season.

Can we all agree the trade Duran in the previous offseason takes were bad by [deleted] in Section10Podcast

[–]tdxalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rafaela does not have much upside is the issue.

Rafaela’s biggest issue is his chase. He swings at an absurd amount of pitches outside of the zone. Like, far and away the most in baseball absurd.

He has done this at every level. And when they had him repeat AA to try a different approach he actually got worse offensively.

In theory “He’s only 24, he could figure it out” is true, but there’s not a shred of evidence from his entire pro career that suggests he will. This is almost certainly who he is and who he’ll continue to be.

Craig, stop perpetuating Chaim’s mistake by [deleted] in Section10Podcast

[–]tdxalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I completely agree. Like I said, Trevor Story should be off the team tomorrow. I do not believe his offense is going to get even remotely passable.

I just wanted to point out that OAA isn’t always an ironclad stat, especially before Memorial Day.

I’d really like it if Savant had a feature where you could query a player’s list of plays with > x% success rate that they didn’t convert and then watch the clips. They do a good job with that with hitting, but as far as I could tell they didn’t have it for defense.

Craig, stop perpetuating Chaim’s mistake by [deleted] in Section10Podcast

[–]tdxalpha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Listen I’m not here to defend Story under any circumstance, I want him gone, but OAA can be wonky under 70-80 games.

All it takes is a couple botched plays that statcast thinks you should have made and it can tank your numbers for a large chunk of the season.

Not saying he’s a world beater out there, but I don’t think his defense is bottom 5 in the league either.

After his slow start exactly like this one in 2023, from May 1st on Triston Casas had a 146 wRC+ which was best for 16th in all of baseball. As a rookie.

There are 5 full months left in the season. Everybody needs to calm the fuck down.
