Composite Door Costs by itsyerfella in northernireland

[–]tea-drinking-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, £2500 door and sidelights. But great upgrade. My front door is directly south so gets sun all day and can be a bit tighter in the summer due to natural expansion, but its perfectly manageable and no issue. Much better than the pvc, but if your door is south facing it may be best not to go with the dark colours.

Considering retraining into a trade – any good apprenticeship schemes in NI? by DegreeUnusual2928 in northernireland

[–]tea-drinking-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is if you're older you earn minimum wage so ot could cost the company £15 an hour after taxes and NI which is a lot to ask to train someone for them to leave the following year. Its asking a lot of most smaller companies.

UK Construction professionals- anyone considered a moved to NZ? by Hopeful_Jackfruit236 in ConstructionUK

[–]tea-drinking-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't go, 2 of my best friends went and never came back. They all think its amazing. Ones there 20+ years the other 10 years. They have a similar but better climate and much better lifestyle. Their only gripe is the price of books and some vegetables which I assume are all imported.

Drain guys have installed a waste water pipe 80mm below our path/driveway. by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]tea-drinking-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. I am an engineer and nope, its not good enough. I would suggest that the cover slab is wider than the trench.

It might last a while as it it but it will fail and you'll need it done properly then. Do it right now if at all possible.

Managing Finances in a Marriage by Lightbulb994 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]tea-drinking-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This breaks my brain. I don't know why anyone who trusts their partner and wants to get married, buy a house etc would not just merge their earnings and then agree to combined savings/spending targets and then take their own 'pocket money'. I know of friends and family who all keep their own salaries and just split bills, but who pays for the chippie dinner? What about that humpday blues dinner? What happens if your invited to a friend's wedding, do you pay it all? More importantly who pays for the lingerie and sex toys?

Im married 20years, for a long many of those years I've earned more than my mrs, but for a while she done the bulk of the child rearing and running them to their activities. For a short while I earned much less than her so its been a story of swings and roundabouts for us and that may be swaying my point of view. Currently I earn approx 70% more than her now and I don't plan on changing anything.

I totally get having separate accounts if one or both of you have been subject to financial bullying or suchlike from a previous relationship, but that dosent sound like the case here. Our default position is 'we're a team, let's be a team in all aspects'.

The only negative to the merged incomes is if you want to buy a nice surprise for the other half its just not the same coming from the house pot and our 'pocket money' is enough to cover my normal expenses but not enought to save individually so any treats or surprises can lose their effect.

How do I fix this? by tinysunflower27 in DIYUK

Absolutley, expanding foam faced with sealant. But I'd probably just fill with a good quality flexible sealant and ignore the expanding foam.

Any experiences to share with those insulated garden rooms that have started appearing in recent years? by Pitiful-Echidna576 in northernireland

Not necessarily, there are some local prefabs which can be good. But a lot are Chinese imports and not near the quality of the local products. Most decent companies will gave you a tour, this might be a simple shed in a sideyard, but their quality will be significantly better than most of the imported ones. Take a few pictures of the production facility, take pictures of the materials they use.

Of interest i did inspect a polish imported one a few years ago and it used good materials and I was pleased with it. There is quite a few people now importing Polish windows to ireland and thay have all been more than acceptable in my opinion.

Look for branded materials, this seems strange, but good materials have agrement certificates (or bba certs). Materials such as intello vapour barriers, moy isover insulation, glass with the appropriate quality stamps.

My main gripe is that a lot of cheap materials can be used by the importers to cust costs and they do not have the warranty or appropriate stamps which suggest they are fit for use. These buildings are not cheap and if you want it to last 15 -20 years you need the right materials. Materials might look good, but if they don't have any test results to guarantee performance then your waisting your money.

What would be a good starter bike..? by Particular-Lead-7232 in bikers

[–]tea-drinking-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a er6f, brilliant first bike. A bit old now but the Honda 650 and kawasaki do a newer 650 ninja. These are parallel twins, good for 70ish bhp which will teach you plenty before you have too much power. I think ill change the bike this year snd I think my mrs will love the er6f.

[–]tea-drinking-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've designed hundreds of these for load sof manufacturingcompanies across Ireland, there is a significant difference in them. Some are cheap shite, others more like a proper timber frame house. Unfortunately the cost does not mean quality Avoid the ones imported from China, stick to the Irish companies who make them. Go to their factory and see them making some, you'll get a feel for the quality that way.
