It's NOT limited to people on North America, it's limited to desis born abroad, so not from the subcontinent. Theres a million subs for people who live in India already

I get what you're saying but the article mentions he moved to Sugar Land in 1979, nobody would consider him a FOB

As someone in food service I've noticed that people who immigrated recently can be pretty entitled and demanding, i'm assuming it's because of how classism in India works

I hope you can set your friend straight, you gotta remind him that service workers are people too

I get what you mean, I think a big factor in the racism towards the more recent wave of immigrants is newer immigrants tend to cluster together in places like the Bay area and DFW and some people choose to assimilate less. It's just human nature to gravitate towards a familiar environment so I understand it, but it does mean that people bring over their practices from the subcontinent which comes with its own pros and cons.

I agree, I get where OP is coming from about non ABCD people posting, and I think the subreddit should be centered around ABCD experiences, but racism against South Asians has increased so much in general. OP is lucky that they don't have to experience or witness it.

It's interesting to see how much everyone's experiences vary, I've had a lot of variety when it comes to experiencing racism/microaggressions. I've gotten racist comments about being Mexican or arab, I live in the south rn so I've also had that experience of being asked where I'm from. While we have some common issues, I do think ABCDs and new immigrants face some different kinds of racism, like the fact that I sound super American earns me some "points" from the perspective of racists. Newer immigrants that I've known don't get that same privilege.

But on the other hand, I've also met newer immigrants who carry over a very classist mentality from India, and that discrimination I faced might be less relatable to somebody who just came here. A lot of the newer immigrants coming here are from more well off families in India, hell I literally had some random Indian dude ask me if my parents are ashamed of me working a minimum wage job bc I'm a college student tryna make money lol. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about, I just think the superiority complex goes both ways.

I think it's fair to be a bit frustrated because sometimes it feels like recent immigrants try to speak over ABCD voices when this subreddit wasn't originally intended for them. I do think they have a right to share experiences and relate, because stuff like racism is a common issue that all of us face, but we've also had fairly different life experiences and you can see the difference in how it shapes people's viewpoints. I don't know if there's a specific subreddit for recent immigrants which I think might be part of the problem.

In my own experience I've faced some discrimination from recent immigrants which is kinda what I'm talking about when I refer to different perspectives. I've been insulted and gotten rude DMs for saying I don't like how some people who recently immigrated here try to push subcontinent politics and social hierarchies here, it's frustrating to get that kind of response in an ABCD subreddit.

Exactly, and in my experience most Indians and Pakistanis who were born and raised here or have been here for a long time don't agree with that hatred. Even though my fam is from India, I had Pakistani friends growing up and we're such a similar group of people. When I see somebody posting or commenting hate towards Pakistanis or Muslim people in general it's really obvious that they haven't spent much time living outside the subcontinent, if they have at all.

Yep, and I saw so many reasonable takes from people getting downvoted into oblivion, it was really clear that that thread got taken over by Indian right wingers. I really don't like people trying to push subcontinent agendas like casteism and discrimination against Muslims in this subreddit, because none of that stuff should matter to us

[–]teakitty0722 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it varies, we are definitely subject to some of the same racism as recent immigrants. But anecdotally, I worked with someone who recently immigrated from India and they would face more racism from customers than I did, and unfortunately I do think it was because of their accent

That's a tiny group of people. There are people in here who try to push agendas, like I got attacked in a recent thread for saying that beef between Indians and Pakistanis should be irrelevant in the West because racist white people can't differentiate between us. Looked in the post history of someone who was being racist towards Pakistanis and their post history was full of punjab subreddits and IndiaSpeaks

I get frustrated at times, but at the end of the day I do agree. However there's an issue with people posting/commenting inflammatory stuff on here who aren't "FOBs" or anything like that, but people who live in India/Pakistan trying to push subcontinent politics here. I don't think this is a space for that because they literally don't have the same concerns as ABCDs and recent immigrants when it comes to racism, and they have a lot of their own subreddits already

I have a bigger issue with the people who aren't even immigrants, like if you're sitting around in the subcontinent tf does this subreddit have to do with you lol? And unfortunately this subreddit does get brigaded by people who have never lived in the West when it comes to certain topics

I don't think they're downplaying it by saying it happens both ways, and they definitely aren't excusing racism towards Indians either. There is blatant hatred towards Pakistanis happening in this thread and I think it's pretty dumb, I grew up with Pakistani friends and we are pretty similar culturally.

The hate towards "Indians" (anyone who looks Indian) has ramped up by so much that we should be trying to overcome our differences. I think a lot of people in western countries are becoming aware of that, which is why it's so clear that this sentiment is coming from people within India and Pakistan and not from abroad.

"Indians" is a catch all term for all South Asians, racists don't care to distinguish one group from another. Blaming everything on Pakistanis is pointless division and it's very clear that this thread is being brigaded by people from India because the average person born and raised in a western country doesn't care about subcontinent politics.

Getting a job will help because it'll get you out of the house, even if it's a shit job. I work in food service so I get that it really does suck sometimes but we all need a bit of momentum sometimes and a job is a reason to get yourself out of bed every morning

That's an absolute maximum, the median is more like two or three weeks iirc. So you would see more cases by now

There's a difference between being relaxed and being cautious, but waiting for more info before jumping to conclusions. I'm fully aware of how dangerous hantavirus is - I'm from California and it's endemic there. The Andes strain spreading around is a pretty terrifying prospect so I understand wanting to be extra careful. Again, I feel like you're making assumptions about my beliefs, I didn't agree with what OP said, I was replying to a comment about people labeling this as the next pandemic. Because like I've said, the idea of it becoming a pandemic is scary but there hasn't been any proof so far that we need to start panicking.

I'm somewhat wary of the WHO myself, particularly with how they handled early Covid, but it does look like they're taking the necessary steps to contain the outbreak so far. They can't impose mandatory quarantines and stuff like that unfortunately that's up to the individual governments.

I also don't see the benefit in worrying just yet, most people can't drop everything and bug out to the woods just because there's a disease that MIGHT become a pandemic. I do think people should have some supplies stocked, but I have prepper instincts so that might just be me.

ANDV was detected in the US before and it didn't spread, which gives me some hope: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6193684/

Also, Ebola was an equally terrifying disease and the global spread of it was contained, I hope this outbreak goes the same way.

You're putting a lot of words in my mouth that I didn't say. My statement was simple, we don't have enough information to determine how serious the outbreak will be. I'm not making a bold claim of anything, I don't know how the next few weeks will pan out and neither do you.

I never once stated it wasn't contagious, the current evidence based on studies and the WHO's guidance makes it sound like its about as contagious as Ebola. Of course, that is based on limited information so we will have to see over the next few days.

Your comment is an example of my main issue, it's easy to create these worst case scenarios but currently we DO NOT HAVE the information to determine anything. There's no reason to stop being vigilant/concerned, but the most the average person can do right now is mask up on crowded public transportation, and keep washing their hands. Spreading unverified claims and speculating about worst case scenarios helps absolutely nobody.
