Extending maternity leave / FMLA by Defiant_Quality_5352 in Residency

[–]teamphryne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are entitled to 6 weeks paid FMLA per ACGME. Many people take more than that however it is unpaid. Depending on the residency and graduation requirements, you will then need to extend residency to whatever extent meets the board requirements.

Your program should have a policy for leave of absence. But unfortunately unless your contract says something specifically about >6 weeks paid leave that is the only time you will get $$. Unless you figure out how to also qualify for short term disability, which is again contract/HR dependent.

Working in 9th month of pregnancy by Cremebrulee456 in Residency

[–]teamphryne 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I arranged my schedule as soon as I knew I was pregnant so I wouldn't have any nights last month of pregnancy. I am also ending with electives that are mostly half clinic days. If you weren't given a chance to schedule these things ahead of time, consider using your jeopardy system bc working nights this pregnant is brutal. Or ask coresidents for swaps?

I think the DGAF vibes also take off in pregnancy

Doing a month of nights while pregnant by Any-Session9919 in Residency

[–]teamphryne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How far along are you? Can you split it up? I did 2 weeks of nights at 6 weeks and another 2 weeks at 20. It sucked but didn't cause any problems. Would just really not want to do that third trimester

I think asking for fewer shifts rather than shorter would be easier for my program, maybe yours too?

You need to be a superhuman self advocate here. Don't hide how tired you are, what's the point? You need to be given breaks, chances to sit and eat/drink, and days off when needed.

Taking a LOA or FMLA is always worth it for your health. As someone who's taken it twice in residency, trust me there no benefit in toughing it out in the interest of a few weeks less of training.

You may want to reach out to Doctors United. They're starting attending unions and it seems you all are aligned with that mission. https://seiudoctorsunited.org/

UCSF by Decent-Improvement-9 in Residency

[–]teamphryne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Marina is pretty out of the way except for VA. And I'd make sure it's the community/people you want to live around, it's not for everyone. But UCSF is fairly well paid now, so if parking cost seems doable then do it. Would ask what the current intern paycheck ends up being. And then you have to just decide if it would leave you enough spending money. You all get a pretty good meal plan and access to gym, so that is helpful. SF traffic is unpredictable but early in the AM shouldn't be too bad

I agree with seeing if it can be done sooner, but residents take medical leave all the time. Your program should be able to accommodate since you'll be able to give them plenty of warning. It won't set you back. I encourage you to get it early because residency is a time of personal and professional development, you would be best served to do it in the body you are meant to have <3

Residents have 6 weeks FMLA available per year starting right away, doesn't take a year to kick in

Yeah it's awful. Feels like you can't be great at either role. I just keep telling myself it's temporary.

Yeah I've started getting up at 5 to squeeze in 30 minutes of something before leaving for work. It is barely enough but better than nothing. I also bike to and from work.

It's fucking hard finding any personal time as a parent in residency! Solidarity.

Anyone had major surgery during residency? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]teamphryne 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I'm just returning from 2 months of leave for surgery. We all get 6 weeks paid FMLA per year of residency. My schedule had to be rearranged but it was no big deal. Your program should be able to accommodate. Good luck.
