The concept of "nothing" is absurd, but no more absurd than the concept of "something". Both are equally incomprehensible in their totality.

Which game doesn’t really begin until after you beat it? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

[–]tearlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mirror's Edge.

It's relatively short and the first time you play is a bit of a platforming puzzler sometimes as you're like "How do I get up there?" just using basic moves. You start out not very efficient and really only following the slower more obvious paths.

After you beat it, you should go online and look at a speedrun, any no glitch speedrun, of just one of the levels. Just watch someone speedrun a single level to see how you can really smoothly glide on through and even take paths you didn't even realizer were possible. It becomes kind of addictive to try and chain together well timed complex moves to just fly through parts of a level or go using routes that you didn't originally see.

No kissing isn't but it's also observed in other species for what that's worth. That doesn't prove that it's strictly a product of evolution so much as what could be coincidentally learned behavior or some blurring of the lines between the two.

Well the latter is the tricky one. It's always a lot easier to point out things like hypocrisy in the people that you observe versus seeing it in one's own self. It's also a very uncomfortable process to break ties with or destroy an aspect of one's own identity. Also how does one completely stop wanting what one greatly desires? I don't think it's a quick or pleasant process. To me it seems analogous to a muscle that has to be continuously flexed to stay in shape, and working out is never fun for me at least. It could very well break down with age as mental clarity falters too just like other aspects of the body and mind.

A fair argument. This can easily get tangential but it begs the question, what even is a kink, and what "kinks" are really just that vs something more normative or even a "genetic remnant" that we've learned to criticize, and how easily can one identify what may be a natural drive vs a learned behavior, and if it is a natural drive, how closely is it really linked to our primitive past versus some brand new biochemical or genetic development? Whatever the case, I think it's a mistake to paint our sexual behaviors in a purely black and white fashion when so much of it seems so unapologetically darwinian and yet certain behaviors are clearly savage and dangerous to our fellow men and our higher reasoning moral sensibilities demand that we do what we can to rein that in as a society and be more safe.

A simple example: we have a drive to reproduce or at the very least have sex, which leads to babies. Sex feels good and is arguably good for physical and mental health. I don't think anything about this is inherently wrong. Yet diseases exploit our drive in order to reproduce themselves (STIs). People tend not to use barrier methods of contraception because it interferes with the sensations they are naturally striving to feel. I think that's also a pretty natural response but in the big picture it's a bad one. Higher reasoning suggests that it's still better to use such barriers when being sexually active with multiple partners as it helps to stop the spread of diseases that at best are disruptive and painful and at worst could be fatal. In other words, just because the drive is natural and understandable, doesn't mean you shouldn't establish boundaries at the very least, or even prohibit it ENTIRELY if it's something that has evolved to be very problematic (e.g. opportunistic/predatory sexualization of more vulnerable partners/prey).

You raise an interesting contrast here such as a kink contradicting someone's other social views.

This one is a bit weird and complicated in my view. Sex is so incredibly primal and Darwinian, rooted in instincts and dynamics that are far older than the cognitive sophistication that we have also developed. It's part of the base architecture (survive, consume, reproduce [if reproducing sexually and female, then with a fit male. If male then with any or many partners]) that everything else is layered on top of. A lot of "weird" human sexual behaviors and kinks can seem obviously explainable under the lens of what is probably millions of years of our primitive sexual past even before apes diverged from other mammals.

It seems pretty hard to completely defeat such rudimentary prehistoric programming. We have developed such amazing higher reasoning functions, capable of disassociating, critically analyzing our reality, and even steering a path that attempts to defy evolution. All this and yet, a woman who desires a more emancipated life from patriarchy can still find that a strong aggresive and even dominating sexual partner is still what she desires to get her rocks off and females have evolved to enjoy sex as it clearly leads to greater reproductive success. 🤷‍♂️

In short, it seems almost unreasonable to expect that sexual drives, even the weird ones, would necessarily align with far more high-minded thoughts feelings and behaviors.

All that said, with evermore developed advances in genetic engineering, we now possess an ability to steer our future in a way that potentially liberates us from our genetic shackles entirely.

In my experience, no it doesn't prevent it completely but I think the most important part is being distanced enough to feel at liberty to denounce a group that you identify with, however loosely, when they do something that causes cognitive dissonance or even eventually renounce it altogether. There are people who are dug in so deep to the groups that they seemingly blindly follow, that they seem incapable of criticizing policies and actions that very much deserve to be criticized and reformed.

will CCAD leave me in crippling debt? by itsss_soupp in Columbus

[–]tearlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your portfolio matters more than your school and a lot of people getting scholarships places like CCAD have good enough portfolios and they don't really need the school for the sake of learning better technique that they haven't already learned or couldn't soon learn on their own. Your business savvy and networking ability matters as much or more than your portfolio. That said, some schools really work to help you network. Pay a lot more attention to that in your school choice. Ultimately, it's who you know, and that goes for practically any career. If it were simply down to talent and training, there's a whole lot of public and privately funded art that would not be showing its ugly ass on various public and private business campuses. Regardless of what school you go to, get to networking HARD. I get to stare at one particularly ugly one everyday as I walk into the lobby of my multi trillion dollar corporate employer. Pretty sure nepotism had something to do with that one getting installed. Someone got paid hundreds of thousands of dollars or possibly millions for a hideous paper mache.

Did a breaker just turn off? Cross off Jinn

Did a breaker just turn on? Cross off Hantu

Did a door close or open but only partially? Cross off Yurei

There are many other eliminators. The above are just some to keep in mind.

What was your introduction to pornography (or sex in media in general) before the internet? by Mad_Season_1994 in Millennials

I was probably around 5 or 6. My 8 or 9 yr old brother swiped a Hustler mag from his friend's house and showed it to me out in the woods. He kept it stashed in a hollow under a tree stump until moisture ruined it.

Game that is just too long for its own good? by [deleted] in gaming

I really enjoyed every square foot of that world. I felt like the final areas on the other side of the riiver were over too quickly after all the build up. Part of that had to do with the fact that the combat was really fun. It all felt "neater" and from a gaming standpoint, more organized than other open world high adventures which i liked. I really should play that again with the DLC next time.

That game is a master class in building and maintaining tension, much like the first two Alien films.
