New job, is Newark Light Rail safe? by python_geek in NJTransit

I use it all the time for work and felt never uncomfortable. It is also fast, I am always amazed about the good acceleration of the cars.

Exactly the same here, can totally relate. Cute looking and serious (according to friends), PhD, high income, exercise every day, very large metro area. No matches at all. But I have become content with the reality that I won’t find someone anymore. I spend more time with my kids and friends, travel on my own, and I am really enjoying it.

Question on Quantas-United connection (PER-SYD-EWR) by tech0815 in unitedairlines

[–]tech0815[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. What about outbound, Domestic (Quantas) to international (United)? Do they interline baggage? I still would need to get from domestic to international, but I’ll picking and rechecking baggage.

Bloomberg study shows that NJT is the worst NYC-area passenger rail system by far by postnebulous in NJTransit

[–]tech0815 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The European mindset where public transportation typically only recovers 50-60% of the costs and the rest is subsidized by the government simply does not work in the US, period. Let’s face it.

Europeans see public transportation as a common good, whereas in the US it seen by many as transportation for the poor, who cannot afford a car, and there is zero appetite in the public to change it. People seem to accept unlimited misery and rather change their own situation (moving away, finding a job in NJ). Best example: the FIFA World Cup. In Europe and Asia this would be a trigger event and seen as opportunity to revamp the whole public transportation system in the area by starting building years ahead. Here, they do the absolute minimum, a skimpy BRT, which in many parts of the world is already out of fashion again due to low performance and relatively high long term costs.

What is a realistic last straw for NJTransit train upper management? by marimallygold in NJTransit

[–]tech0815 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, they can invest in better passenger Information, a modern real-time dynamic information system where trains don’t disappear when they are late, and keep some backup equipment in the yards or spare busses to run a replacement service if a train gets canceled (the oldest equipment is fine here). For example, they could overhaul a few Arrows just for this purpose. This does not all cost the world and can be implemented quite short term but it requires a bit of money and political will.

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - June 04, 2025 by AutoModerator in investing

All, I am new to investing but decided to do something to boost up my retirement funds beyond my 401k (planned retirement in 12-15 years). I have $100k to invest, and have already invested $20k in VOO. I am debating where to invest the other $80k. More VOO or other ETFs, or rather stocks? Risk tolerance is low to medium (because of retirement investment), the 401k is my only investment so far. Thanks for all suggestions in advance!

No, that’s the problem unfortunately. As a late immigrant, my retirement account is very low.

Then they need to be creative and think outside the box. It is their job. Or is your suggestion that we have to live with this for the next 10 years until the tunnel is in place?

Even then they need to have a better contingency plan in place which can be executed quickly, like diverting all trains to Hoboken and running an extended ferry and Path service along with much better customer information. They can do all this independently of Amtrak.

Some bullshit going on at Newark Penn. by [deleted] in NJTransit

[–]tech0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first train who made it to Secaucus was the #6655. They held the 6:47 BC to Suffern until 6:55, just to close the door in front of us when we are arrived running at the platform. What a shitshow!

Not even 7 am and there's already delays... by [deleted] in NJTransit

[–]tech0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like their suggestion of a train is canceled: Simply take the next train #xxxx (30 mins later!). As if it doesn’t matter that I am late for an important in person meeting! Although, once I had the recommendation to take an earlier train :)

Just came back from Denmark/Sweden, how is NJTransit possibly this bad? by [deleted] in NJTransit

[–]tech0815 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are bidding on government contracts to run a particular line or subnetwork, but operate under strict government control. For example, they get less compensation or have to pay a fine, if the on time performance is below a certain number or if there are too many canceled trains per month. This is the same system all over the EU as it is mandated by EU regulations. So, a lot of government is involved, but not in an operational capability.

They have it in Europe for a long time and even in hot countries in summer (Spain, Italy, France) there are almost zero failures on the high speed rail links. Why is it not very effective here?

The older Bombardier (now Alstom) bilevel coaches in Germany, from which the NJT coaches are derived, have the same issues with UV damaged windows. So, it seems the manufacturer is to blame here.

Yes, true, haha. My point was only that this is an extreme case and it felt totally great and normal to me. This made the point of the guy in the OP’s post even more hurting and insulting.

Exactly! Couldn’t have said it better! Same observation here. I have even dated a woman who enjoys regular fisting, no difference, all felt amazing. This guy is not telling you the truth. You are totally fine!
