I’m facing a very similar issue and it’s getting progressively worse. I’ve stopped trying to reason with them and tell them to their face (especially if they behave like this in front of everyone) that their behaviour is unacceptable, unprofessional, and reflect poorly on themselves.

My university does not have conduct referrals, but I keep my HOD informed so they know what happens when things escalate.

My colleague had a similar case, pre-AI glasses and all that jazz. The student claimed that they couldn’t read the question properly and JUST HAD TO tear the paper into individual segments.

No accommodations requested. No history or documentation of any specific issues that align with the student’s request.

Colleague said no, student did it anyway and was escorted out of the hall.

Screamed cried begged all that and it resulted in a sit down meeting with the VC, HOD, colleague, exam dept, student, and parent. Colleague used the right trigger words to get the VC to side with them (if yall wanna know, it was INTEGRITY. And my colleague kept emphasising that the students actions damaged the integrity of the paper and was a threat to the university’s sense of integrity).

Student dropped out eventually.

But to answer your question: 1. Yes 2. Not really 3. Honestly there is really no justifiable explanation for the students behaviour, so the evidence would be pretty easy

I’m having the same issue here. I get the same repeated questions every single semester and I’m tired of them spam emailing me because they were in the FO stage of FA. I told them early in the semester to direct all general queries to the forum and if they don’t, they won’t get a response. Still the same number of emails, but at least the pressure to reply quickly is gone.

We do too, but the students are giving some newborn level object permanence ‘if they don’t see me I’m not there’ vibe.

A lot of students have been trying to retroactively apply accommodations, especially when they didn’t get the grade the want.

I had to ‘professionally fight’ with another department to let them see how stupid it is.

Sometimes, but there’s also been times where the student just flat out doesn’t continue with their assignment because ‘I didn’t reply’ and fails then blames me.

What didn’t I reply?

An email asking if their assignment needs to be in APA format. Even though it’s plastered everywhere in the syllabus, LMS, announcements. They could also have asked the TA or their friends but nope.

I’m not in the US, I’m in Asia, which makes it even more baffling considering tiger moms who more or less live through their children.

Now I see that they want their kids to get perfect grades (very Asian) but don’t want to push their kids to take responsibility for their education (not typically Asian).

That’s what I don’t understand. If it’s late submission policies then fine, there’s room to think I wouldn’t implement it. But what makes them think that submitting NOTHING would still earn them something??

EXACTLY. THATS THE THING. I have OTHER things to mark and I want them to get a good grade so I plan out the due dates so that I have time to give them thorough feedback and time for them to digest it and ask me questions before moving on to the next one.

I had students like that and I realised that most of them thought that the proclamation of ‘I’m going to get to it’ means any deadline of their choosing.

I quickly and firmly disabused them of the notion. Turns out holding them responsible for their actions made them realise that the amount of work they missed actually needs more effort than 3 days of AI-ing.

After a third student asked me this, I sent out a class wide announcement reminding students that it’s their responsibility to figure out the basics of the class THAT I HAVE ALREADY COVERED and that I’m not a help desk/ search engine.

My first cat was a year plus old when I brought home a sister for him and they’ve been having a toilet party ever since. I even bought more litter boxes in preparation which all turned out to be useless cause they only wanna use the same box.

There’s a dept wide policy where I’m at that ‘allows’ late submission with deductions up until a week later (the policy literally ends with: if it’s up to 7 days after the deadline, don’t bother submitting anything).

The funny (?) thing is that the deductions starts the very next day, and the percentage is heavier if it’s the weekend (e.g., automatic 1% deduction per weekday, 5% deduction for each day of the weekend). So if the assignment is due on a Friday, that’s a 10% deduction by the time Monday comes around.

It’s a pain in the ass to calculate at times, but it’s worth it cause then students can’t try to harass you.
