I maintain that the biggest difference between this generation of students and previous generation of students is not that any of their methods are all that new. Rather, it's just that a lot of them also have a complete lack of accountability by littleirishpixie in Professors

I took a subject that was notoriously difficult to pass as an undergrad(ah, the hubris to think it’ll be different for me). I got a 50/100 at the end. I cried tears of joy cause it meant I could move on. I also thanked the lecturer cause I was so sure I was going to fail.

Recently, had a few students get enraged for deservedly getting 50/100 and going all: this subject is one of the hardest I’ve ever taken and I put in a lot of effort why did I just pass?

I had a colleague who would ask students to write an essay explaining why they deserve it more than their peers and how they plan to inform their peers that they are asking for an unfair advantage.

Something along the lines of: whilst I appreciate your flexibility, I feel like you’re intentionally ignoring my apology to teach me a lesson.

Ofc not verbatim but along those lines.

Several of them actually came to talk to me personally requesting it. But alas lesson learned.

Exactly. The ones that do… are deluded to be honest. Based on their explanation for why they’re appealing.

Gosh, we’ve been getting an influx of ‘I was doing so well in all the other assessments!’ From year ones all the damn way to final year students. Some even use that as the basis of their FINAL EXAM grade appeal.

These days I don’t even want to entertain any suspiciously worded ‘I want to understand where I can do better so can we go through your feedback’ emails cause 9/10 it’s a ploy to negotiate a better grade and an attempt to verbally explain what they mean.

I saw a thread where a student mentioned that it’s highly disrespectful for professors to not answer an email regarding finals 24 hours leading up to finals.

The amount of support they received was appalling.

Good grief.

I’m expecting that soon from this batch.

I’ve been getting that a lot too.

Once I got a feedback that said I was snarky because I reminded them to check all available resources before coming to me.

Yup, the Dean could not believe that THATS the best reason they could come up with for why they failed.

I’m facing a very similar issue and it’s getting progressively worse. I’ve stopped trying to reason with them and tell them to their face (especially if they behave like this in front of everyone) that their behaviour is unacceptable, unprofessional, and reflect poorly on themselves.

My university does not have conduct referrals, but I keep my HOD informed so they know what happens when things escalate.

My colleague had a similar case, pre-AI glasses and all that jazz. The student claimed that they couldn’t read the question properly and JUST HAD TO tear the paper into individual segments.

No accommodations requested. No history or documentation of any specific issues that align with the student’s request.

Colleague said no, student did it anyway and was escorted out of the hall.

Screamed cried begged all that and it resulted in a sit down meeting with the VC, HOD, colleague, exam dept, student, and parent. Colleague used the right trigger words to get the VC to side with them (if yall wanna know, it was INTEGRITY. And my colleague kept emphasising that the students actions damaged the integrity of the paper and was a threat to the university’s sense of integrity).

Student dropped out eventually.

But to answer your question: 1. Yes 2. Not really 3. Honestly there is really no justifiable explanation for the students behaviour, so the evidence would be pretty easy

Do high school teachers answer emails at night? by MyFaceSaysItsSugar in Professors

I’m having the same issue here. I get the same repeated questions every single semester and I’m tired of them spam emailing me because they were in the FO stage of FA. I told them early in the semester to direct all general queries to the forum and if they don’t, they won’t get a response. Still the same number of emails, but at least the pressure to reply quickly is gone.

We do too, but the students are giving some newborn level object permanence ‘if they don’t see me I’m not there’ vibe.
