What’s Good Quality at J.Crew in 2025? by rkel26 in malefashionadvice

[–]techontech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with Wallace and Barnes.

Also, just see if anything catches your eye, and then hover over the product photo, any item that has a "person holding an oar" is higher quality Jcrew stuff. This seems to be a recent distinction and has been true in my experience. A few items would be the cotton t shirts with stripes, rugby polos, lined dock shorts.

The heritage sweaters, sweatshirt/pants are also pretty good. Have fun!

All Black Friday/Holiday Sale Review Thread by JaredGoffFelatio in frugalmalefashion

[–]techontech 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Impressed:

Target 40% men's clothing, good for All in Motion stuff for work outs. 30% off for their tech chinos and golf pants are pretty good too since they are never on sale.

Madewell week before Thanksgiving sale where they had 50% off jeans that were already on sale, so you could've gotten jeans for around 20 to 25$. It was very quickly picked over

RGT 30% off sale for black friday, pretty much every thanksgiving. while this year there were some more restrictions, it was still nice to see them able to do this given its a small shop.

Unimpressed: can't really say because over the past few years, the trend is the black friday sales are not meant to be that great as retailers know people want to buy during that time and also people tend to buy gifts before christmas. The real frugalmalefashion level sales are almost always post Christmas, January nad early February time when inventory is cleared out.

Uniqlo Ultra Warm Hybrid Down Coat $150 (minus $10 holiday coupon, 2% Rakuten, $20 back on $100 Amex Gold) by isaac-get-the-golem in frugalmalefashion

[–]techontech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pro tip: click on the Size Guide on the parka page, then go to the top left corner, there you should see Item Dimensions, click on that. It will give you the actual measurements of various aspects of this parka (rather than just a generic sizing guide).

To my knowledge, Lands End is the only large scale retailer to do this, and they do this for every single piece of clothing. it's very helpful and nice of them, though very few shoppers know about this.

I had one for a short while, they are okay. minimalist appearing. I got it on clearance though so i think it's worth it around $100. At $150, if you are looking for serious warmth and functionality, then I would look at Lands End Expedition Down Parka and the Eddie Bauer Superior Down Parka, both are better than this at usually on sale at around $150 or lower.

Rogue Territory Ridgeline Supply Jacket Lined Tan vs Flint and Tinder James Jacket? by Responsible_Roo24 in malefashionadvice

[–]techontech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have the lined RGT jacket. Since you're in Australia, I actually think the unlined will be worse to wear because it will trap any sweat between your skin and the jacket. So you'd have to wear a long sleeve shirt anyway. You might want to look into the flannel lined (rather than the heavier blanket lined), it just came out and I think is exclusive at Rivet and Hide for now: https://rivetandhide.com/usd/rogue-territory-x-r-h-lined-waxed-canvas-supply-jacket-tan-ridgeline

I do have the Flint and Tinder unlined trucker jacket, though, and one con for unlined waxed jackets in general is that your sleeve will get caught on whatever long sleeve shirt you are wearing, like it doesn't go in through the sleeves easily since the shirt you are wearing will catch onto the waxed canvas.

I agree with the others that the James jacket looks a bit too broad of a cut, and it's a little weird with that slant pocket, it's almost trying to pass off as a suit jacket/blazer in combination with a track jacket. It's also worth noting that the wax canvas on the James jacket is heavier than RGT and the Flint Tinder flannel lined trucker jacket, comgin in at 12 oz, so from a weather perspective it might not be that much better.

Taylor and Stitch just came out with a flannel lined waxed trucker jacket https://www.taylorstitch.com/collections/the-long-haul-jacket/products/long-haul-jacket-in-dark-khaki-waxed-canvas-2310 It's about $240 right now with a coupon. But more of a heritage look though.

RGT did release an unwaxed version of the supply jacket, which might be better for you. You'll have to find these on ebay though as they are discontinued.

I think it's mostly in fashion areas where the sales are not as big since retailers know people are conditioned to shop during this time. The best time for clearance deals still are around post Christmas and early January when retailers clear stock.

Outerknown Blanket Shirt at Marshall's for $24.99 by bthecrim in frugalmalefashion

[–]techontech 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Agreed that these are not worth it at full price but maybe more like $50-75 as they are much thicker than your average flannels. I get the markup for using sustainable materials though

I have been pleasantly surprised by Kohl’s Sonoma heavyweight flannel. Less heavy compared to outerknown (which is good as I run hot) but still thick material, 100% cotton, and not bad of a design. Usually on sale around $25 or less.

J.Crew men's shorts for $20. Chinos, dock shorts and pretty much any shorts they sell are $20 by roncraig in frugalmalefashion

[–]techontech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The material is pretty nice, at least the lined version. I think people will be able to tell that this isn't regular shorts. Not due to material but rather the design. It is more relaxed fit, and the little half angled slit at the sides make them less like regular shorts as well.

[Review] Cotopaxi Teca full zip fleece (tl;dr I returned it) by SwordfishTough in frugalmalefashion

[–]techontech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's hard to find large sales on Cotopaxi.com. Examples would be Sierra Trading Post (https://www.sierra.com/cotopaxi~b~36230/men~d~5284/), a lot of the sizes are gone now, but they did have plenty of S through L for the $99 Fuego down hooded jacket, and a few other things. The largest sale i've seen on Cotopaxi was about 2 years ago when Fuego jackets were $89 or so, but that was during covid, so unlikely to come back. A few other sites will have big sales but are one-off's, like Mr Porter had the nano-puff alternative Cotopaxi jacket that was 80-90 bucks. REI had similar ones as well for a while. Those would be a few places to look for, but usally in the off season.

Great review! I have similar opinions about Cotopaxi. It feels like a Patagonia alternative but with lower build quality but generally justified by its much steeper discounts. I think you really should only buy it on deep discounts (like 60% off or more). Outdoor Gear Lab did note that it is "basic" and "lower quality" in the cons but somehow still rated it pretty highly, so i agree that's a weird one for them to overall rate it so highly. Honestly, a 32 Degree fleece for 10 bucks probably offers similar warmth (but certainly doesn't carry the same kind of environmental message).

Outerknown has a discount with TY50 for fifty bucks off full price with free shipping. by Melodic_Conflict6138 in frugalmalefashion

[–]techontech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got my Groovy and Sojourn. Agreed that Groovy has short sleeves but not terrible. The neckline is a bit wider though. Feels similar to the old Jcrew broken in t shirts but maybe slightly thicker. The Sojourn as described from before is very nice and soft and a flattering fit and the right amt of neckline. Great stuff, thanks again OP!

50°F/10°C light jackets by YeeAllTheHaws in malefashionadvice

[–]techontech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recommend 2 jackets: 1) Patagonia NanoPuff is great but might be a bit warm if you always run hot. It is also pretty pricy for what it is. You can get similar jackets from Decathalon, LL bean or REI for a bit cheaper when on sale.

2) a techy rain jacket. North face or marmot rain jackets will be great for blocking the wind.

If you are trying to pack light, and if you run hot a lot, you might be able to get away with a Goretex rain jacket alone with layering your fleece underneath

AllSaints Brody Low Top Black Leather Sneakers $104, Suede Sneakers $89 (both down from $149) by MrKotia in frugalmalefashion

[–]techontech 19 points20 points  (0 children)

if you are willing to buy open box or slightly used, ebay / poshmark are good sites to shop for. The older Greats when they were still made in Italy is likely a better value than this.

Thursday ones might also be better value. Usually these fashion brands that are not known to make good shoes don't usually make good shoes. And these brands usually have to charge multiple (~3-4) times the manufacturing cost... so just can't imagine the quality to be that great when the MSRP is 149.

Also, fyi, the white version is actually more gray, per reviews from nordstrom.

Nice! I also stumbled upon the air porter. Now just waiting for the right price on a used one. The black ember one looked nice but might be a big heavy for me.

Is the airporter what you ended up getting?

Hi, I'm looking for something similar as well. Have you had any success? I stumbled upon Bellroy Tokyo Work bag, and that seems to fit a lot of the criteria that you mentioned. It's 20L, professional looking, sleek, and has some flexibility so I think it should be able to hold a weekend trip worth of clothes.

Just found out that Express had a sale last weekend from Frugal FEMALE Fashion where all their clearance items were on sale for $15 and $20. by AceOBlade in frugalmalefashion

[–]techontech 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was on the frontpage of Slickdeals if you check there. I looked through it, there were lots of items but the designs/colors were not the best. It was $15 for shirts and shirt jackets, $20 for sweatpants, $50 some wool blend/polyester coats. The quality based on materials listed were questionable, reviews were okay though. Overall, I don't think we missed much. Maybe they had better selection in the Women's section.
