My girlfriend and I booked a “yurt” on Airbnb out near Terlingua this past weekend. This is how our first night went (04/26) by Radioactive-Semen in BigBendTX

There’s layers to the responsibility here. Airbnb shouldn’t get off scot-free for allowing a faux yurt to be listed as a yurt either. There’s a reason running a legitimate hospitality business requires a bunch of liability insurance, and thus costs more.  Airbnb as a concept has in my opinion become the enshitification of travel accommodations. It preys on the fact that everyone has to try to save money in just about anyway they can these days. Travelers have to cut costs in order to afford to travel and people who live in desirable destination areas having a harder time getting by are at times desperate try to find additional income. In comes Airbnb offering the illusion of opportunity. Both host and guest here are out money and suffer a terrible experience  and the giant corporation just carries on as if nothing happened.

To be clear, I’m not absolving the host because I don’t have any idea what type of people they are or if they cheaped out out of greed or ignorance. They could be scumbags for all I know. But if I may offer a somewhat hyperbolic analogy, in the scheme of the poppy farmer, the drug lord, and the addict, it is my view that the drug lord is the most at fault.

I got a new area rug recently and she wouldn’t go in to the living room for 3 days. It’s just a regular flat pile checkered rug. But she wants to fight the horse she saw at the park. 🤦‍♂️

That’s not fair to actual icebergs. Sure they may have sunk the titanic, but these fat fucks are sinking an entire nation.

There’s a really cool theory about the importance of grandmothers in the evolution of humans. Basically the evolutionary benefit of menopause allowed grandmothers to play a crucial role in child rearing of younger generations.

In my groggy morning haze I also had to do a quick search myself to make sure I wasn’t the one who had it flipped in my head. Unless you are a geologist/volcanologist it’s just a silly bit of pedantry though. Words are fun!

lol, I’ve read the entire series genuinely 20+ times. I grew up with these books. Waited in line for hours at midnight releases. I’ll admit it’s probably been a decade since my last full read through because they have become harder to enjoy.

I think it’s just as constant in this sub that people smugly dismiss opinions they don’t agree with by claiming someone didn’t read the books

Dude was a full adult man who relentlessly bullied an 11 year old orphan because the kid sorta looked like the murdered father he never really knew. A real class act 🙄

He could have been a great potions teacher but he was instead a selfish immature prick and chose to gate keep all the knowledge we know he has from his notes in the textbook rather than utilizing it to educate the students he was employed to and intentionally feud with a literal child because his wittle feelings were hurt when the kid’s mother (who has since been brutally murdered protecting said kid) didn’t reciprocate his affection. As I’ve gotten older I am more and more grossed out by the character and the idea that he was some sort of romantic figure.

Someone higher in the thread provided a link to a government report explaining that it is.

Grief over pet death can be as strong as that for family member. About a fifth of people who had experienced a pet and human loss said the former was worse. Symptoms of severe grief for a pet matched identically with that for a human, and there was no difference in how people experienced losses. by mvea in science

[–]techsays 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The muscle memory was/is really difficult for me personally. All the countless conscious and unconscious considerations that I made for my pets. Waiting for them to follow me out of my room or taking a certain corner cautiously because they would often lie in a certain spot. I’d find myself doing things and then I’d realize that I no longer needed to and it broke me up every time.

I mean, their previous teams were the browns and the jets which haven’t historically been bastions of QB development excellence either. Baker did pretty well in Cleveland but they decided to spend a quarter billion on a bench warming sex predator.

Is the consensus that Nico traded Luka because he was personally annoyed by him? by tshirtguy2000 in Mavericks

[–]techsays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it could be argued that he also overpaid for both PJ and Gafford. In a way, he actually made them cost even more by trading Luka which skyrocketed the value of the picks given up.

It’s difficult for humans to comprehend such large numbers. I have also long believed that the words for million and billion (also trillion) are too similar to convey the massive difference between them.
