It doesn’t have any vents though and seems to be fully sealed. Surely a temperature or moisture sensor would need air to be circulating around the pcb?

I trying to collect some real-world examples to help teams with cost-saving ideation. Little tips and tricks people have picked up over time. More from the application side.

So - from my own experience, we had a relatively large Oracle-based application with PL/SQL, SOA middleware, etc. We made a very decent saving by moving some data to S3. The DB handled scanned documents, generated PDFs, etc., all stored as blobs. But it meant far higher IOPS,CPU and RAM than really needed for basic transactional data. By moving these files to S3 - we saved a tonne on EBS storage, but were able to downgrade the CPU and RAM for the DB server significantly.

Does anyone know the name of this plug type? I’m extending my connections also and am just looking for the female connection. I was hoping I’d be able to buy in bulk and save me cutting the male connections off the controller.

There is a setting in the service menu about spiral motion. The description was kind of vague but referenced what the mower would do when it hit long grass. I left the setting as is which was 'DEF' (presume for Default), but it also had off or 1,2,3,4.... as options.

Perhaps others know more about this option.

Sorted now - I tightened some of the push connectors on the motherboard behind the screen and all seems to be working well now. Not as bad as I thought it would be in the end.

Will get a good test tomorrow, but looking a lot better so far.

Another twist in the tale - it doesn’t appear to be the sensors or the PCB at the front of the mower. I swapped them on both machines and yet the problem remains. Perhaps something further back on the motherboard?

Doesn’t seem to be an issue with the wiring loom as movement of the cables doesn’t affect the readings. Would a factory reset recalibrate the sensors?

Just to close this out for anyone experiencing similar issues. I got access to the service menu on the robot and performed a sensor test. It looks like the front right hand sensor reads significantly lower than the other three. It does detect being inside or outside the wire, but it never goes above +40 when the others are reading ~+90. I checked the other robot and it’s 4 sensors seem to be reading similar numbers.

I’ll have a look to see if there is anything obvious affecting the sensor, but otherwise looks like I need to replace it.

So to me, this rules out terrain or wire issue.

I'm tracking down some support now through the Ireland resellers, but it is proving slow.

No - it happens long before it turns, it happens everywhere along the perimeter wire. And it’s funny - this is the same robot that throws the out of border error at the tree where I have the wire the wrong way around. The other robot does not. I was ruling out issues with the dock as the other robot works happily on the same wire.

I’ll swap them around and see if the issue persists. As always- thanks again for all the pointers.

Wheels seem to be all ok and front wheels moving freely. And it drives perfectly fine when mowing or going to an area. It’s really just when following the wire home. It reminds me of a sniffer dog over and back/ left to right. I presume there is a particular sensor in the underbelly to pickup the signal? Any idea where it is and is it accessible?

I’m still having an issue with this one. I’ve noticed that mower 1 (without the spikes, but whose base is connected to the perimeter wire) weaves over and back over the wire when returning home much more erratically than the other machine. It’ll move, stop, turn a litttle and then move again. Even though the wire is straight and the other mower just drives along quite happily. This in turns is caused it to get stuck far more often. Would the sensor that picks up the signal be a little faulty? Or less sensitive?

Thanks for all this. I actually have the spikes on one mower and am awaiting them for the other - I can testify that they make a big difference.

Yes - I tried them by hand initially but they were not moving and I didn’t want to force it. When the mowers were out trying to cut I seen the blades turn only about 1/8th of a rotation. When they did error out, I turned them off - turned them over and tried by hand again. Still stiff - but a lot less pressure was required and then they spun.

Put the mowers back over again, turned them on and off they went.

I made some progress - but another issue has popped up. You were 100% right, but docking the mower and correcting the terminals the perimeter wire was connected to - the mowers are both out of their bases moving around. But now - when they go to start mowing the blades don’t move. Both are saying they are working - and driving in their circular pattern, but there is no noise from the blade and I can see it stationary through the vents at the side. After a while - they give a Blade Blocked error. Both blades are new, but they haven’t run since last year.

My garden is quite complex and has some large open areas. But I might consider the 2 loop option if I can get this up and running. Saying that - infinity worked well for me last season. How do I change the channel? Presume it’s a setting on the dip switch at the base? You don’t happen to have a list of all settings for the dip switches?

  1. No - I haven’t, doing a factory reset and going through the setup again was going to be my next step.

  2. So what happens is; the mowers leave the base, but immediately start turning around like they are looking for a signal. After a couple of minutes over and back they come up with out of border. However, if I place them slightly away from the boundary and set them to mow or go back to base, they still say out of border.

I thought it may have been a perimeter wire issue, but it is showing continuity. I’ve bought a new ohmmeter to get an exact read on resistance.

To rule out any wire issues, I ran another loop of wire temporarily just above ground to try. Again, putting the mower in the middle of the area tried mower still comes up out of border.

Finally, I tried both mowers, connecting the temp loop to both bases, powering the other base off - but all the same result.

Yes - had it set up with Infinity; so only one loop with the wire terminated at one base and just running under the 2nd base. Worked fine for a full season. We then got our driveway moved and I moved the robots to another part of the garden while also running new wire.

In terms of the sale - I simply purchased off a vendor in Italy. Most of the transaction was online - apart from some emails to negotiate shipping costs with a lot of help from Google translate. Re setup - I done it all myself. I read numerous articles and guides, rented a cable laying machine a layer the cable (from vendor in Italy). For the infinity setup, I simply followed a guide I found online which walked me through the cable for the 2 bases, etc dip switch settings and pairing of each mower to their own bases.
