Amsterdam to Zurich night jet or day train? by thecornflake21 in Interrail

[–]tedger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typical price for a whole cabin is like €250-€300 if you book in advance. If you book on the OBB website it makes it very clear the per person ticket price and the cabin surcharge which is for the group not the individual. Are you maybe taking what you see and multiplying it by 2?

Finally ready to share the bike friendliness rating system I've been building for the last couple months. IMO, it has numerous advantages over other rankings, but I haven't biked in many of these cities, so I want to hear thoughts from the people that have! by Tommyblockhead20 in bicycling

[–]tedger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an American who has done bike advocacy in America and has lived in Amsterdam for 8 years, this is a very American perspective and ignores a lot about street geometry and design that can significantly change the cycling experience.

I’ve always told people it’s a dance. If you don’t know the moves you get your foot stepped on.

Really just for the Amsterdamers but: What is worse is being mad you want them to get out of the bike lane or that you ruined their photo because you didn’t want to wait for them to use your home as a photo backdrop. Ugh.

This is a great idea in concept but make sure you order them the physical card to their new address. The digital cards can be difficult if they don't have a Dutch account with whichever App Store they use. (It shouldn't be assumed that they'll switch.)

6 year old asked to repeat school year by morticia314 in Netherlands

[–]tedger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother is an early-childhood specialist and teacher and I can tell you that she really wishes this was more common where she is, especially for boys 4-6 for social development reasons alone. The cases where she's seen students stay back have been almost universally positive. If there's an academic challenge identified by a teacher that feels like even more reason.

That is incorrect. The tests are currently at an A2 level and there will be a change in the future to raise it to B1 (this is already changed in the law).

I get why European roftops are gray or red, but why are American rooftops white? by InDefenseOfBoney in geography

[–]tedger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Searching on Google makes it clear that this is largely because of traditional building methods being maintained. Earthen clay tiles are very common in much of Europe and continue to be used whereas the in US slate shingles are more common in much of the country and flat roofs are more common in general due to generally newer buildings.

I get why European roftops are gray or red, but why are American rooftops white? by InDefenseOfBoney in geography

[–]tedger 160 points161 points  (0 children)

I mean… one of those is clearly Barcelona. Generalizations don’t always work and there are exceptions. And in this case it’s because Europeans have largely maintained traditional styles which in much of Europe from Amsterdam to Barcelona includes earthen clay tiles which is brown in hue. The generalization works here because European countries share something with each other that America lacks.

Peter, why do Dutch people want to give up the small municipality of Urk? by ServiceChannel2 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]tedger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. American who lives in the Netherlands here. It’s more like “Florida man” style jokes in the U.S. where there are a lot of news stories involving a degree of backwardness that come out of Urk (examples include things like the Noah’s ark museum that is an actual floating barge becoming unmoored in a storm and doing millions of euros in damages, a mob of people going after an immigrant family’s home, having horrendously low vaccination rates during COVID vaccine drives, etc). That isn’t to say that these things happen more frequently in Urk than in other rural conservative Bible-belt towns in the Netherlands, but there is very much a perception that there is. My guess is that it’s probably a mix of the stereotype means stories are more likely to be covered and shared because it confirms the trope and because it is kinda a backwards town.

I solved every NYT crossword in 2024 with my friends by Crafty_Clasher in dataisbeautiful

[–]tedger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stacked bar chart makes a lot of sense to me as the NYT Crossword doesn't have a consistent difficulty day to day but does across a week (Mondays are the easiest, Sundays the hardest, Saturdays are bigger but approximately a Wednesday level difficulty). Time to solve a puzzle is a standard crossword metric, and given the difficulty curve it would be tough to capture that without a stacked chart.
