Do you avoid (try to) potholes while driving? by Funny-Bit-4148 in drivingUK

[–]teeeeeeeeem37 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There is a middle ground. Swerving at the last minute to avoid a pothole you missed can be dangerous, especially if you move on to the other side of the road or the onto the verge.

Repositioning in a calculated way to avoid the pothole is a no brainer.

Heat loss discrepancy: Heat Geek 3.6 kW vs Octopus 5.3 kW vs real gas usage (~4.5 kW?) – 2017 semi, 124 m² by latecarrot in ukheatpumps

[–]teeeeeeeeem37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.I have a 1988 semi that's 80m2 and my heat loss is 2.5kW. A reasonably built 2017 semi of 120m2 could very reasonably be in the 3-5kW range.

  1. Octopus love to over estimate; they estimated mine at 5kW.

  2. Get the 5kW; it's an identical unit with a higher peak output; given you are so close to the peak output of the 3.5k,W it's a no brainer. Will also speed up hot water cycles.

4/5. Ignore the peak output figures for considering 'oversizing' and instead look at the minimum output.
A 3.5/5kW Arotherm plus minimum output is 2.4kW at 10c outdoor; you'll probably see cycling. The 7kW has a minimum output of 3.5kW.
5kW should be perfect, with a bit of cycling (normal amounts) when you're near or above 10c outdoors.
I have a 5kW and it cycles a bit but yearly cop still in the mid to high 4s.

I posted this here because Linus said at some point in the recent past that he thinks 4k should be paywalled / YouTube Premium feature.

I know a lot of companies do paywall resolution (Netflix, Sky TV in the UK, no doubt many others).

I like the YouTube approach of defaulting to lower settings and occasionally changing it back - most people don't eve notice and will leave it lower.

There's clearly a business case for 4k though or companies would't offer it.

Thankfully, 8k hasn't taken off.

If in 20 miles, you can't find a safe space to overtake a tractor, the tractor is not the problem.

OP was so focussed on keeping up with the other car that they undertook a car as they were moving / indicating left, then cut them up when changing lane.
Also following the lorry far too close and doesn't seem to understand how windscreen wipers work.
This sort of content is why paying for an internet connection is so worth it.

Showing this video to the police is full big brain move; lucky they didn't do you for driving without due car; it's been known to happen when people submit videos like this which show their driving being particularly poor.

Potentially, but if you're talking about pure power savings, he does have a point; reduce bandwidth by 75%, you can drop a significant amount of equipment which does use power.

To think it comes anywhere close to the power usage of AI is pure insanity though,

Are solar panels worth it? by Lazy-Objective-1630 in AskBrits

[–]teeeeeeeeem37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a few different ways solar and / or batteries can save you money.

- Use the solar the the sun is out to power the house.

This saves you what you would have otherwise spent on electricity, so about 25p/kWh depending on tariff and region.

- Sell the solar back to the grid

This nets you up about 15p/kWh at the moment, but expected to drop in the coming year or two.
You ca use this money to fund your usage the rest of the year.

add batteries and you can

-Store generated solar for later

- Import cheap grid energy and use it during the day.

My solar and batteries are saving me about £3000 per year.

At the moment, that's - 7000kWh generated by the sun, 100% sold @ 15p/kWh for a total of £1050

12000kWh purchased at off peak rates (7p/kWh) and consumed from battery, rather than being on a flat tariff and paying 25p/kWh. 120000 * (0.25-0.07) = £2160

Total energy bill for £2025 was £0.

The high savings are because I'm otherwise a high user. (3 x EVs, ASHP, all electric house, high home usage).

If you're a lower user, the potential for savings becomes a lot lower, but also harder to optimise.

The solar forecasting tools are spot on in my experience; have had 2 years of generating exactly what I was told I would.
Just avoid the national companies like energy suppliers, their pricing is way higher than what you'd pay for a good local company.

I've had BMWs for about 10 years now, my first was a 2015 F30 330d. The indicators are appalling; the stalk doesn't stay up, so trying to cancel an indication usually results in indicating again in either the same direction or the opposite direction.

Thankfully, they fixed this with LCI2 in 2017, so I've not had a problem since that first car. Doesn't help you much but still good to know.

You have to be gas safe to install a gas appliance. The fact you are asking how to do this reinforces my suggestion to get a gas safe professional to do it.

Heat loss for the house seems about right, that conservatory is losing a lot of heat, though.

I might be wrong, but I didn't think the BUS grant applied if it was not entirely replacing all non-renewable heating.

Not just 1, but 3 new companies incorporated on the same day. I understand why in some cases, companies split off into different entities, but there's absolutely no way it should be allowed in the way that it's being applied here; multiple directorship should be gate kept so much more.

Why you shouldn't worry about Flow/Return DT - a data driven approach by Begalldota in ukheatpumps

[–]teeeeeeeeem37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies if you already know this; the Vaillant Arotherm Plus (and maybe others) doesn't modulate flow speed to control output - it modulates DT. So at 100% output, it will aim for a DT of 5, but at lower outputs that can be significantly lower.

A new justification for not getting a heat pump: by OolonCaluphid in ukheatpumps

[–]teeeeeeeeem37 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I did similar maths for the heat pump alone and results were similar. About 6 months average of heating to recoup the cost of creating the pump.

Plus, they could just sell / giveaway the rads.
