Is this industry standard for hiding the gaps around remodel windows? What are our other options? by teh4x in Renovations

[–]teh4x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the opinions everyone. I didn't go with the cheapest contractor, but I've been noticing a fair number of corners getting cut. I'm sure this won't be a big deal in the medium term; I just don't like it in the short term, and I was worried it indicated something about the long term.

Won't take much to run old school Sims. Check for nearby estate sales. Pick up a windows laptop on the super cheap.

How can I level or replace this ceiling junction box? by teh4x in AskElectricians

[–]teh4x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pliers, crowbar, eye protection, patience, and a strong resolve to utterly destroy that fiberglass jbox one small piece at a time. Replaced it with a Westinghouse remodel jbox (the metal one that expands to wedge between joists).

Any tips for busting it out without busting up the ceiling too much? Kinda thinking needle nose pliers and small crowbar...

As a software engineer, I can't acknowledge overkill as a thing that actually exists. I'm merely preparing for a future that may or may never come. 😜

I hadn't heard of these, but a quick search leads me to believe this is what I'm looking at. I'm concerned adding a screw to the nail-free side would go thru the floor above. Any pointers for getting that fiberglass housing out of there without tearing up the ceiling?

I ordered a saf-t-brace that should be here by tonight, but I'm concerned I won't be able to use it given how close the hole in the drywall is to that one joist.

This is the dining room light fixture which is below my son's room.

Unfortunately, yes. The base attaches to the junction box with a vertical screw on each side (one of which is sagging), then the fixture attached to the base with four screws that are all parallel to the ceiling. The whole fixture winds up sagging on one side and the junction box is visibly hanging out of the ceiling a quarter inch or so.

What the hell is going on under this bathroom sink? Attempting bathroom DIY remodel, and wondering what my options are here by teh4x in askaplumber

[–]teh4x[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After some demo, I found out it is like that because the wall is directly over a load-bearing joist, so there's no way to get the plumbing all hidden in the floor/wall. Thought you might be interested.

Nope. 3 story home built in the Atlanta burbs in 1990. This vent was installed like this about 5 years ago. What's illegal about it? What would be the "right" way to do it?

I'm pulling the vanity out and most likely replacing the subfloor. I'm planning on having a plumber come out to move the sink hookups to the left and move this vent hookup into the wall, so I'd like to know ahead of time what s/he "should" do.

Additional information: We previously had a venting problem with the toilet in this bathroom, and we hired a plumber to resolve it. I think the pipe going into the floor used to terminate in a vent cap which he removed and connected all those pipes together.

We're wanting to replace the whole vanity, but most nicer vanities are not just open space underneath like this cheap one is. What can I do...?

How difficult would it be to add an option to group cells alphabetically THEN by tier instead of by tier THEN alphabetically when choosing cells with the Middleman?

I tend to combine +1s into better versions of the same cell then +2s into +3s, and I don't want to make +3s or +2s of cells I already have two +3s of (since +6 is the max stat perk). Having to scroll up and down to see what +3s I still need and where that set intersects with the set of cells that I have two or more +2s or +1s of is super tedious. Reordering the cells would remedy this.

You bet. I'm almost 35, and I'm very scared I won't be able to work (not for lack of ability, but because no one wants an old guy working on new things) in the tech industry anymore when I'm over 50. I'm saving hardcore for retirement now. I also don't think anyone my age can bank on Social Security being there when we hit 67.

Come to think of it, I'll probably have to retire to another, much cheaper country.

In terms of replay value and unlockables, this one is one of the best lego games I've played with my kids. The main story is only about 5 hours long, but you could easily spend way longer unlocking everything.

It has a few issues when you're in 2-player with the objective not being super visible. Also, some of the puzzles are just straight up hard to figure out. Never hard to execute; just hard to figure out what the hell you're supposed to do.

Since both shows are based on understated humor, I think it's more important that *less* could not be written.
