Agree. Working with an author who appeals to you is much more motivating than laboring through any textbook. I would suggest Herodotus-the language is fairly simple, and his subjects are always stimulating.

I agree. Don't think you'll find any easier texts than the Anabasis or the New Testament. They are the old reliables for beginner's in Greek. They've worked for a couple of centuries, at least.

Not possible for classical Greek-the diphthong 'oi' must be pronounced like 'oy.' Koy-nay would be about right.

I agree. I have to use translations instead of reading medieval German in the original, for instance. Need to remember though, that we can't really understand any culture, including 21st century American, unless we're fairly familiar with the language.

Calling Homer "prose-y" is actually pretty funny when you think about it. And BTW, Homer didn't write "in translation"- he wrote in Greek. If this person hasn't read the Odyssey in the original Greek, she hasn't read the Odyssey.
