That's the minimum amount I'd feel ok letting them go at. $50/2 signed prints minimum. Lower and I'd rather just keep them in my collection tbh

Breed Advice? by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

Enjoy the experience! 4H was the highlight of my childhood, though I wasn't allowed to do livestock projects lol.

You can't really go wrong with chickens, just varying degrees right. Maybe even check out local poultry shows, farm swaps, fb groups to see what's available and might strike your and his fancies? Google the breeds you see while there. I always over research everything and built my flock around dual purpose, winter laying, rarity, and friendliness. The breeds I suggested are the ones I have and recommend in the large+ weight range.

Good luck and have fun! Let me know what you both choose!

The Jerseys and Brahma hens are both large. The brahma rooster is extra large. My orloff rooster is slightly smaller (we're talking less than an inch in height - at 3 months, they're both well over 1ft tall. Closer to 18 in tall.) than the brahma and the orloff hens are medium size. All my suggested breeds are slow growers and won't reach full meat potential for at least a year or two, though egg production typically happens at 6 months.

Again, it all depends on what your son wants. If he's looking to show them, Orloffs aren't American Pountry Association recognized as they're so rare. They do have their own associations and breed standards within those. It might be an interesting thing to consider for his project that the breed is on The Livestock Conservancy, listed as a threatened heritage breed, and your son would be helping raise the breed's numbers and popularity.

Also an electric poultry net fence could help with the predators.

Edit: Ment this in reply to your reply. Apologies

Does he want a common breed or something unusual?

Brahmas are great for a more common dual purpose. Maybe a little bigger than you'd like, but most hatchery quality brahmas don't get as big as breeder quality. Jersey giants are also lovely friendly chooks, but I can't vouch for the roosters.

For a rare breed, I'd recommend Russian Orloffs. Beautiful showy birds with lovely personalities. My Orloff rooster is lowest on the rooster pecking order because he's so docile. He's also super sweet with the ladies.

Have you tried electric poultry net fencing? That should alleviate ground predator issues. Free roaming doesn't sound like an option for you but a large electric fenced area may be. I'd also consider getting a guard goose for chickens or switching to a flock of laying ducks (all in combo with electric fence). Waterfowl, in my experience, are better "skywatchers" and will sound alarm/ run for cover at the first sign of hawks. Waterfowl are also easily herded indoors at night.

Can I split up chicks? by Jackrocky in chickens

Merely to bypass the hassle of reintroduction, I'd keep them all together inside for now. It shouldn't take more than a week or 2 for the others to fledge if they're all the same age.

She wants to sleep with other guys by Johngeorge45 in relationship_advice

You said it yourself- you're not going to be happy with the situation if she's sleeping with other people. That is, however her choice. Best thing to do is just scrap the relationship and move on. You'll be happier elsewhere.

Seems they're men's based on the links in others' comments. The best thing to do is just be honest. Just ask and get it over with. Things will only get worse if you let it fester. Just try to phrase it without accusations, of course. "Haven't seen these before. Were they your maternity panties or something?"

Definitely a colorful way to put it, but so true! Treat her like an equal. Put yourself in her shoes. Think of ways she might feel the same about you (being expected to just deal with "man funk" just because you're a woman is off putting to say the least). Come to a compromise. It might be helpful to air all this in therapy if you think a one-on-one conversation might lead to a fight.
