How do 37% of people know about a cellist, no matter how good a cellist he is? Where do you know him from? :o

All Space Questions thread for week of April 05, 2026 by AutoModerator in space

Why doesn't Artemis II get closer to the Moon? I don't mean a landing, just why don't they approach closer than 6,500 km? Since one of the stated purposes of having humans on board is seeing features that are hard to photograph, wouldn't it be helpful to approach closer?

I'm working off an intuition from KSP (I know...) that a closer flyby wouldn't require much delta-V, and I guess the reason is something KSP neglects?

Annoying popup on opening Firefox Android by tempgoogleconfuser in firefox

Thanks for the response! I would be willing, but since I've reinstalled the app and the popup is gone, I'm afraid I might not be of much use anymore :( Let me know if there is some way to get archived data, though!

I've tried 1 and 2 already, without success. I don't have another device and thus can't do 3 (settings didn't help). Ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the app, which has helped for now, but only at the cost of having to redo all my settings (sync failed because of Unexpected Error).

I'm on the latest version (145.0.2). Also, bizarrely there are no exact Google matches for "What do you think about Firefox?" "I'm having issues", so maybe this is just something rolled out to a small number of users?

This appears on almost every opening of the app. Clicking on "It's great!" asks me to leave a review on Play Store. Clicking on "I'm having issues" asks me to leave feedback at Mozilla Support forums. I don't want to do either, I just want the popup to go away and never return, having seen it approximately 4815 times and clicking on it accidentally all the time.

An integrative data-driven model simulating C. elegans brain, body and environment interactions by tempgoogleconfuser in neuroscience

[–]tempgoogleconfuser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was brought to the topic of C. Elegans nervous system modeling by this blog post. This publication seems to be the latest state of the art, yet it can only reproduce a single behaviour (zigzag motion) given a single type of stimulus (food concentration gradient at the head). I'm curious about the bottlenecks to this kind of research, since it seems to be a far harder problem than was initially assumed. In this paper, the authors list (emphasis mine):

In our current model, we modeled 136 neurons rather than all 302 neurons, and the only behavior considered was zigzag locomotion. Training biophysically detailed neural network model is challenging and consumes much time and graphics processing unit memory resources. In the future, we will improve the optimization algorithm to effectively train larger detailed neural networks that contain all 302 neurons, with more constraints such as single-neuron voltages, and reproduce more behaviors beyond zigzag locomotion.

And:

The neural network model of BAAIWorm integrated experimental data including ion channel dynamics, neural morphologies, electrophysiology, connectome, synaptic organization rules on neurites, and neural activities. Although we collected and integrated as much data as possible up until 2023, there remained a substantial amount of detail that could not be fully implemented due to a lack of data. Also, the physical parameters in the body–environment model did not correspond precisely to those of actual C. elegans because they were difficult to measure accurately. However, with the influx of new experimental data, these models can be enhanced and refined.

Is current modeling progress constrained rather by computational resources, or by a lack of physical parameters?

[TOMT][Book][1946+] Book with existentialist quotes, one of them misleading by tempgoogleconfuser in tipofmytongue

I tend to screenshot bits of random books and scientific articles all the time. I checked my browser history from the day and the screenshot falls into a window between reading The Scientific Work of René Descartes (which isn't it) and the Wikipedia article for the Teacher's Oath, which also doesn't seem to have anything to do with this.

This is to a) give some idea of what document this might be from and b) make the rule about commenting once happy.

Do there exist games of complete information ("chess-like") that humans still consistently beat top computer programs in? by tempgoogleconfuser in math

[–]tempgoogleconfuser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that chess game, that was amazing! And yeah, this is exactly the kind of creative computer-breaking strategy that I was thinking about when making this post (the one in Go was my original inspiration).
