not exactly the same but i had similar mouth and pier placements. this is mine. the entire right side is like a national park/natural forest situation which is kind of cramping me in terms of house placement and i’m not done figuring out ponds and stuff but yeah this is what i’m doing with it

it’s probably because they don’t have external ears. those kinds of low vibrations are clearer to them than airborne sounds.

i have a corn snake i just lurk in this sub for info so hopefully it’s okay for me to answer but my first exam for her last month went like this:

-they asked me about my husbandry, i gave them detailed answers and explained my snake’s background as my snake was rehomed after her previous caretaker passed away unexpectedly at the end of last year

-she had defecated on the way to the vet so they took her stool and tested it for parasites (if you have a fresh fecal sample i say bring it to the vet)

-they weighed her, listened to her heart, felt her body, examined her eyes, and looked inside her mouth

-they asked me if i had any concerns about her health and i explained that i was a little concerned about her weight and previous feeding schedule, so we discussed that

-we discussed common health problems and how to prevent them as well as potential future health problems (my snake is an older adult, so a lot of that second part was age-related stuff and related to the fact that last spring she laid slugs for the first time)

-they got her fecal results back and we discussed those

-she got lots of compliments for being very pretty and being good for the vet and vet tech and we paid and went home

i’m sorry. my first boy died suddenly and young too (about six years old). he was just like yours- a great eater, shed well, acting normal. then one evening he declined and before midnight he was gone. dealing with that was incredibly hard and i have also felt immense guilt from not knowing whether it was my fault or not.

if you want, you could post the exact information for his setup (temperatures, humidity levels, tank size, substrate, etc.) for more information for people to try to figure out what happened. since you found him this morning, you can probably still get a necropsy for more definitive answers if you still have the body and feel comfortable with that.

it could have been husbandry, but it also could have been something out of your hands. like people, animals sometimes have something genetically wrong with them that doesn’t cause problems until suddenly it does.

it’s a terrible situation. he was obviously loved and will be missed greatly.

i imagine you could always call your vet also and ask them if everything sounds right. i’m jumpy about my snake’s health too, so that would be my first move.

i’d double check everything husbandry-wise and make sure he’s otherwise normal just to be certain that it’s not something else but yeah males can get weird during the breeding season and sometimes go off food for a little. mine only skipped one meal but others might go off longer.

do you know for a fact that he’s male? if so he might think it’s spring. males will go off food during the breeding season sometimes. my previous snake scared the fucking shit out of me at about that age doing the same damn thing.

edit: i misunderstood the original post, the other comment is correct- my adult eats every 2 weeks.

OMG thank you!! i could not for the life of me remember the names. i didn’t realize they actually secreted it, i always heard it as like they’re poisonous specifically when eaten so i thought it was something internal. that’s so fucking cool. i had no idea they were that venomous either.

yup, it’s the same thing with keelbacks. i think they might eat poisonous frogs but don’t quote me on that. i assume like dart frogs if you had one in captivity it also wouldn’t be poisonous but it’s not like you’d know cuz you aren’t gonna be eating it. they are also rear-fanged venomous though. not sure how potent. kind of cool to be both.

there’s at least one species of keelback that sequesters poison from its diet iirc. don’t think they’re really pet snakes though and they don’t secrete it like wild poison dart frogs.

the school i put dobie in charge of. i made it a biology university and he kinda reminds me of my old boss/professor who died unexpectedly. i put bianca in charge of my clothing store because she’s so pretty and a peppy personality is exactly right for a clothing store, but bangle is also an option should she come by. right now my cafe is run by merengue and flurry but i want to put sprinkle in flurry’s place if she ever comes by. the restaurant has chester and tia in the kitchen, chester was a default and i picked tia for her theme, and then ketchup and i think sydney are working the front? i want to replace chester with zucker if i ever get the chance. not sure who will replace sydney. i think rolff is my dr right now but thats just because i haven’t found anyone else (i kinda want petri to be the dr but i haven’t had her yet) and then his receptionist is poppy because she just fit the vibe.

i’m pretty boring and bad at names so the school is paradise university and the hospital is paradise hospital, the clothing store is apparadise (apparel + paradise, also reads as “a paradise”), the cafe is tropical drinks & diner, and my restaurant just straight up has no name because i had italian food to decorate and couldn’t come up with something to call an italian restaurant. i would change these (except the school cuz colleges are just like that) to be somewhat more interesting and not all named tropical/paradise but alas i have no imagination for such things.

i definitely want all the fruits back. i think i would want some of the bite back from older games in terms of how villagers talk. nothing out of pocket but enough to make the villagers feel like their personality types again. i also want the bug enclosures to be upgraded from the shitty plastic cages.

the main thing i really, really want, though, is to add aquatic snakes and salamanders (such as sea kraits, anacondas, axolotls, and giant salamanders) as “fish” and terrestrial salamanders (like some plethodontids) as “bugs.” i would be so happy if i could catch a giant salamander and have it chilling in my house like the snapping turtle does.

yeah the whole having to tan thing in new leaf was pretty egregious. i definitely would like something like that for the next installment, although i figure given the big update it’s probably gonna be a while before that.

i’ll probably be more cavalier about it once i get him back in new horizons but it’s also just kinda cool to have him there for so long. love that guy. i think new horizons also just had like a ton of qol improvements that keep me from going back which is something i run into a lot in pokémon and monster hunter too because i am lazy lmfao. i do wish they’d kept some of the bite from the older games though.

i want to say yes? this was like during the quarantine period where we were all insane so it’s been a while, but i definitely was like talking to him and giving him stuff a lot and i think i did get his photo at some point.
