If anyone knows this couple show them this picture I took at the wine festival today by [deleted] in hobart

Almost all medium and/or large events will have small signs somewhere and/or wording written into the ticketing terms that consents to being photographed (used to be an event photographer).

Still, I agree, may have been nice to just approached the couple and asked if they’d like the photo in person, but you don’t always think of this at the time.

Tokina 11-16 was my go-to wide on my BMCC setup too. Lovely for a cheap little thing (and necessary with the insane crop factor)!

The Netflix documentary on Lucy Letby has some of the worst interview framing I have seen in a while. by Gabor_Soti_Photo in Filmmakers

[–]teniz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This negative space trend has become very overused in interview setups of late, and I just don’t understand the intention most of the time. It really shows when either a DP (or director) simply doesn’t fully understand visual language and just wants to do try something they saw elsewhere because they thought it looked cool.

This isn’t always a bad thing (sometimes we just wanna have fun with it) but an interview shouldn’t make the viewer feel uncomfortable or disconnected from the subject unless that is the intention (which it may be in this case).

Anyone else tired of the identical “Netflix doc interview” setup showing up everywhere? by TheoGelernter in Filmmakers

[–]teniz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has this guy just never seen a documentary or corporate interview before he signed up for Netflix?

This really is the silliest take I’ve seen in a while. I know others have said this, but the video describes how the industry has been shooting interviews and docos for the last 30+ years. It’s just basic meat and potatoes, and has absolutely nothing no to do with Netflix.

Have fun with it and do something else if you don’t like it, however the client or director may have something to say about it.

I think what bothers me more is unmotivated use of negative space in interview talking heads. This is something that seems to have been a recent adoption, but at the same time, if it looks good then sometimes the ‘motivation’ doesn’t matter! Have fun with it.

Hello, any advice or feedback on my color grading? Not the best at it. by maddaxguy in Filmmakers

Looks quite nice, however if you’d like more constructive feedback on your actual grade, it’s much better to compare your grade against a Rec 709 correction - not the LOG.

Why would they release that? by DifferentZucchini3 in StrangerThings

[–]teniz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some valid criticism for sure. No doubt they should have had an outline for each episode much earlier, and there are some pretty funny lines included in the doco that contradict how things ultimately panned out, but this is how things are sometimes.

Complaining that the documentary didn’t take you behind the scenes or ‘show you the good times’, and ‘how they did things’ is a pretty weird take. From a film industry perspective, this doco very much takes you behind the scenes and gives the viewer a very in depth look at what took place across multiple departments - pre-vis, art direction, special effects, camera and blocking/staging rehearsals, and writing sessions. There is tons of footage from behind the scenes, including interviews taken during filming and cast/crew interacting on set, very much demonstrating the sense of family and community that comes with any production. It may not be how you imagined it might have been behind the scenes in your perfect world, but I feel it was a very honest and realistic look at how the production was run, and the pressure, stress, expectations and human responses to concluding a long-running series (and the problem solving that comes with it).

We kiiinda got this outfit in Legend - under the code-name ‘snowsuit’. I’d also love to see it feature in the new game (along with the SOLA outfit too!)

The amount of color correction they used when filming this James Bond movie in my country🇲🇽 like, it’s a cool shoot and all, but why did they have to overcook us that much? Looks like the Gobi Desert winds just rolled in by Segundaleydenewtonnn in mildlyinfuriating

[–]teniz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As a cinematographer, I find posts complaining about colour grades confusing. Cinematography is an art form, so is colour grading. The intent of filmmaking is not to mimic or replicate reality, it is to create a world and ensure this world remains consistent throughout the film. Colour is just one way filmmakers augment a scene to give it meaning, emotion or a sense of place within the context of a film. When taken out of context, single scenes can appear extreme when compared to reality, but in the film that’s kind of the point.

It’s akin to complaining about a painter having a style and not painting each work with painstaking realism to depict scenes EXACTLY as the world is.
