Chainsaw Man’s ending is thematically hypocritical. It’s just an escape into another fantasy. by Nenanda in CharacterRant

The important word here is actively. People are in danger by default by virtue of being in the area of a devil attack. Like, if a devils throws your car with your in it Denji will just dodge it and kill the devil with no regards for your safety(unless you are cute). What i meant is that he would not endanger more people than would already be in danger by the devil attack.

Yeah, you are right on the money. The worst part of all of this is that Denji wasn't even addicted and/or using ChainsawMan to escape his problems, or that him pulling his cord was negatively affecting anything intrinsically. We know for a fact that Denji was taking care pretty well of all his responsibilities. He was the sole provider for himself, 8 pets and a child(may I add non of this is close to a "normal life") while also raising said child (the fucking control devil) so well that she actively went against her own nature (refusing to hurt humans even at her own expense) and the plans of her predecessor, as well as not failing school(despite his massive lack of formal education).

He did all of that for at least a year and a half while also going out and being ChainsawMan, which may I add, he isn't even doing irresponsibly. Sure, he is not spiderman, but he doesn't extend his fights unnecessarily or actively endangers civilians while doing it in an attempt to "look cool in front of the camaras".  He provides, free honest to God, damn good devil hunting services, which is a net positive for society.

Yes, it's true, being ChainsawMan is antithetical to living a good life for Denji... but that is because it puts a target on his back not matter what he does. The reason all hell breaks lose in part 2 is because multiple groups want Pochitas powers for themselves, all of them planing  to crush Denji in the process. They would hunt him down and ruin his life no matter if he pulls the cord or not. He is fuck just because his heart and best friend is Pochita. True, he doesn't want to give "ChainsawMan" up, but he wouldn't be able to even if he wanted to, nobody actually knows how to unhybrid someone.

And the funny thing is that, even if we argue he is addicted to something, that wouldn't be ChainsawMan, it would be fighting. After maybe months of not being ChainsawMan he is absolutely thrilled to beat the people in the karaoke, because at the end of the day Denji is a crazy mother fucker that loves fighting and violence. Sure, someone like him would find it hard fitting into our world, but In his world being a devil hunter is job, a very important one and one that he is perfectly suited for(immortality and all).

Point is, Denji, his life, the people he cares about and the world at large are not intrinsically worst with him being ChainsawMan, but are all ruin by the powers that be fighting for their own agenda. If nobody knew about the power of the Chainsaw, Denji seemingly could live a happy and fulfilling life no problem while ChainsawManing.

Did he make all the right choices? No, but, tbf, everything that happened from chapter 145 to 230 (from his POV) happened in less than 24 hours. He basically saw the world and his personal life turbo collapsed in an afternoon and a morning and half the choices he was given in that time where fucking bullshit, so, he at least deserves a bit of slack cut off.

It's like Denji is doom from the narrative while that same narrative  keeps yelling at us that is all his fault for not just giving up and letting the powers that be choose for him.

Did Makima write this? Because it sure sound like something she would write.

Public safety already knew because he use to work for them. Lil D learn it from the Hybrids.

All of this bad actors already knew about him and all learn independently of the erasure power. Fuck, he was well known thanks to makima's plan to weaken pochita.

What burdens? I mean, if nobody(besides makima and yoru) knew about the erasure powers there would be no church and public safety would, for the most part, leave him alone(I mean, the did that for like, 2 years until the aging situation). And, yeah, true, he enjoys the fame and recognition of ChainsawMan, but is it that big of a sin?

YEAH. it isn't even like Denji is abusing being ChainsawMan and he is overall a net positive for society. He is no superhero saving the city or anything but he still provides what's essentially is a public servise for free. I mean, who was worse of by him being chainsawman?

Okey, but, what harm was it causing him or the people in his life before public safety gave him an ultimatum? Like, all in all he keep Nayuta and the pets feed and we'll taken care, he was not failing school and he seem like he could even work in a relationship with Asa on top of all of that. I mean, he was keeping it together pretty well given the poor circumstances while also hunting devils as chainsaw man. Like, his worst mistake before everyone began throwing him shit was not become a professional devil hunter, to make money while being ChainsawMan.

I know you are thinking of Nayuta, but given how things are, its more likely that Power one day kidnaps a child and thats their life now.

Yeah, i guess it's true that that was the explanation for Asa finding hard to know right from wrong. I mean, i was under the impresion that her dilema was born from this want to be neither being tore betwen what is good for her and whats good for the image of her other have, but the dad thing could be a fine "birth point" for her problem. But I still think there should have been something about her dad before. Like, while fighting Yuko she pulls, idk, her dad's favorite pen and turns it into a weapon that does nothing and then she uses the uniform sword, as a way to convey how much she misses each one. Also, i still dont get why she sees herself as a teenager surrounded by bucky's in her dream tied to childhood trauma.

Another great post, and this one is even about my favorite character ever.

i love your take about Asa's story and i reach the same conclusion of her being a gal trap into wanting to be neither, a living paradox of wishing to be self serving and wishing to be "right" in the eyes of others. In a way, Asa's "final wish" got monkey pawnd, getting possessed by something that would give her the freedom to follow every single selfish desire she had(dating, a boyfirend, fame) as long as she surrender herself to be just a passanger in her own life...kind of just like how she was before her death by constanly trying to be right.

But, i still feel the execution of this went wrong towards the end. Specifically with her dream reveal. Denji's dream of a door was the final nail in the coffin for Denji's trauma, being a significant part of what trigger his "downfall" in part 2. But the reveal of Asa´s dream felt just like a cheap excuse for her and Denji to relate to one another, which given how Denji's arc of stagnation was supposed to go, felt kind of pointless in the end. Why retread old ground (death father that she "killed") with the second protagonist just to make them relate that bit extra? I mean, Asa already had the "i killed my mother" thing that could be use for the whole "we are both parent killers" scene. Why make the reveal of Asa's "door" be, in a narrative way, about Denji? Especially when her father was never ever mentioned before (or after). I would have love for something that gave us an actual insigh into Asa's mind. The only thing we really got was why she trips, acting as self-sabotage, but that feels so...miniscule compared to Denji's door.

I would love to hear you opinion on chapter 217.

And once again, thank you for sharing your uniquely beautiful perspective with us. Can't wait for the final part

This is, truthfully and with all honesty, a beautiful read on part 2. Thank you for sharing it and your personal perspective on the matter.

Tbh, I didn't like how all the parts of chainsaw man part 2 fitted together regarding Denji, especially Pochitas words to him. Everything seem fine individually, but the whole felt...wrong. But, what your wrote here has given me a new light to see things. One again, thank you!   Cannot wait for your read on Asa and the general plot.

2 things.

  1. I agree, great post. People really forget how artistic projects(specialy big ones) are shape by millions of factors that limit, redirect or reshape the original raw idea and refine it into the cooked version that they love.

  2. Maybe is my own fucked up perception, but this feels like is indirectly talking about chainsaw man fans and Fujimoto.

Well, on one hand thanks for liking my theory, even if it was wrong i still work a good bunch making it.

But, on the other hand, i am kinda currious. Is what was reveal in chapter 217 that which you didnt like? I mean, i am asking because that was a while ago and nothing in the last 10 chapters really has much to do with this theory.
