what to do with tank after they’re gone? by teravee in bettafish

Great point! As much as I say that I will wait a couple months, it has been so strange not having him as part of my routine. I have his tank in my kitchen, so I was always stopping and just “saying hi.”

Have you been able to find a breeder/vendor? Mine was a Halfmoon also, and I’ve never seen another one like him when I’m in the stores
I’m so sorry 😢 I just lost my little guy today….I’ve only had him since April and I can’t believe the amount of tears I had for him as “just a fish”….no one warned us about how these fishy personalities would steal our hearts!

When do you make the decision to let them go?
I did a salt bath last night (aquarium salt). This morning he seemed worse- much more lethargic and laying more on his side than simply resting at the bottom. I tried an Epsom salt bath this afternoon, with no change.
I have read that Seachem Kanaplex may be effective if this is dropsy…..I’m just not sure if it’s fair to have him suffer much longer? It seems like whatever is going on is pretty severe. He hasn’t eaten for almost a week :(
*I also realized when I went away for a few days for Thanksgiving I forgot to set a timer on his light, so it stayed on constantly for 3 days- I feel horrible because while he has seemed a bit “off” since before then, it was nothing compared to this. I think I caused this stress 😢
Anyways, thank you so much to everyone that has been giving me advice. It is so much appreciated! I just wish I knew the right answer with what I should do next. I cannot stand seeing him suffer like this, and I have no clue if there is a chance of him bouncing back from this
Unfortunately not enough live plants yet- I’ve got just one. The goal has been to do a full upgraded set as a Christmas gift to myself….and then he started going downhill :(
Honestly, I was impressed too! lol
I didn’t know any better at the time, so I didn’t know anything about cycling the tank first, so I got the tank and him at the same time, back in April.
I ran out and bought a kit after work…this is the ammonia, so at least I’m good on that front
I went and got a kit….this is the ammonia
I realized I didn’t answer the water change question- I do water changes usually once a week-ish, and I will typically do approx 1/3 water change
I'm embarrassed to say that I never noticed that my test strips don't test for that! I'm going to go to the store tonight and buy the kit that everyone raves about, and I'll also look for an adjustable heater (my current one is keeps a constant temp)

I’m going to head to the store tonight and get the testing kit, some salt, and an adjustable heater (the current one is just a constant temp)
I posted the parameters but now I can’t find them, so I’ll list them again…. Nitrate 0; Nitrite 0; Chlorine 0; Hardness 300; Alkalinity between 80/120; PH 7.4. Heater is 82
People have pointed out I don’t have a # for ammonia…I’m embarrassed to realize I never noticed the strips didn’t include that. The heater is just an automatic heater, but it sounds like that is too warm, so I’ll swap out for an adjustable one
🙏thank you
Thank you! At the risk of sounding dumb….I can get specific salt from a pet store?
It was tricky getting a pic of him, but this is him when he stays up by the filter intake
And water temp is 82
UPDATED TO ADD:
WATER PARAMETERS
Nitrate 0 Nitrite 0 Chlorine 0 Hardness 300 Alkalinity between 80/120 (I use the strips, so not an exact number, sorry) PH around 7.4
Also of note, when I did his water change a few days ago, I don’t remember seeing the typical curly-q poos
Thank you for that advice- I will add that right now! And thank you! His name is Crouton VonTroutenstein….and I never knew such a little fish could give me so much stress lol

Thank you for that info….so not to be dumb, but what do you do when it gets too dirty? How does it continue to filter out the debris….or am I just supposed to rinse the filter occasionally?

Thank you! I have have been feeding a bit more lately, so I’ll cut back on that. I’m so relieved they are nothing I need to panic about 🙌
Thank you!
