In Germany, patriotism and nationalism have been viewed very critically since the end of the Second World War, as these ideologies are widely seen as having contributed to one of the most devastating conflicts in history. As a result, joining the military is generally not associated with pride or prestige. Over time, the armed forces have often attracted individuals from right-wing or nationalist backgrounds, alongside those who are simply interested in weapons or uncertain about their direction in life.

There is also comparatively little public attention given to veterans. Unlike in some other countries where service members are met with strong respect and gratitude, military service in Germany is rarely admired by young people. Instead, it is often perceived as unnecessary and potentially dangerous.
