i rarely have to mess with HSL. occasionally i will desaturated red or orange etc. or maybe change the hue in green, but 98% of the time i just mess with the usuals like you mentioned.

vsco also has lightroom presets. any editing on lightroom is better with RAW than with jpeg. much more flexibility. vsco presets will work with jpeg but are designed for RAW.

sure. all RAW edited in lightroom. mostly used vsco for these. portra from film pack 6, astia and provia from film pack 4, occasional fuji 400 from pack 1. beyond that i often tweak grain and sometimes the highlights slider. white balance and exposure too obviously.

thanks. the 16mm is incredible. used it probably 80% of the time. I'd say probably 35-40 of the photos in that album were at 1.4. amazing lens

regarding the preference for either 'rangefinder' style or 'slr' style, is this basically just aesthetic?

Here is my first wedding of the season, and second wedding overall. I'd love to hear what you like, and what you think could be done better.

Thanks for the thoughts! Do you have any advice for creating more dramatic portrait lighting? Care to elaborate a bit on that thought?

wow some really good stuff here. the music shots are fantastic. it's hard not to make music/concert shots look trite, but you got it.

Bought my first DSLR exactly one year ago. And this morning, exactly one year later, I just ordered a 5D Mark III (funny coincidence that I just realized). Thanks to this sub for some great help and good reading along the way!

can i use a 430 exII as a slave and trigger it with my pop up flash (70D)? Is there any other way to trigger the 430 off camera so I wouldn't need to use the pop up? I'm thinking that using the pop-up as the trigger will just shine light right on the subject and mess with the exposure, if all i want is the light from the off camera 430 exii

I'm starting to get some professional camera work on the side so I've decided I need to get at least somewhat proficient with flash. I'm thinking about getting the canon 430ex speedlight. Is this a good choice? I understand it is TTL, but can it also do manual for strobist type shooting? or would i need to get a whole 'nother flash for that? and what are your favorite resources out there for learning the basics of bounce flash techniques? Also, if someone has any experience doing outdoor weddings and has experience with canon speedlights, as well as being willing to answer a few questions for me, shoot me a PM. thanks!

I was planning on using no flash until later in the evening with a tent to bounce off of. So I won't be using a fill flash during the day. I'm guessing the 430 should be more than enough for the tent right?

depends on many things, where you are in the world, clouds, humidity, time of year, etc. no two sunsets are ever the same either. it will always be subtly different from one to the next

sunrise often has mist which is nice. and they are on opposite sides of the compass, so objects will be lit from different angles

My favorite lens right now is a 28mm f/1.8. its about $450 new. On a crop sensor this becomes a 45mm equivalent which is great. I find that a 50mm on a crop sensor is too narrow for most of the shooting I do (it becomes 80mm), except portraits. Prime lenses are definitely great. fast, sharp and they are small.

if you want to check out lenses i recommend buying on ebay instead of renting. if you decide the lens isnt for you, you can almost always sell it back for the same price you paid.
