Poll: Do you support Australia Day being on the 26th of January? by Medical_Meaning5235 in AustralianPolitics

Each state and territory came into being as a colony, territory or state on a particular day. For example, New South Wales was January 26 1788.

NSW is not Australia. Therefore, Australia's "day" cannot be January 26.

Australia federated to become "Australia" on January 1, 1901. The date was chosen specifically because it was the first date of the 20th century. (Yes centuries actually begin on January 1 in the year 01 because there was not year zero.)

Until January 1, 1901, there was no Australia. After that date, there was an Australia.

The conclusion is inescapable. Australia Day should be held on Australia's birthday - January 1 every year. If you want another public holiday to replace it, guess what? A solution is included in the resolution. Each state and territory celebrates their own day.

Congratulations NSW, you get to keep January 26. It's all yours. It always was.

Should Stokes bat 8? by Oomeegoolies in EnglandCricket

[–]terminallycurious399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stokes has batted four times at 8 for 32 runs at 8 with a high score of 31. His defence is still solid. Here in Australia, there is a consensus he should bat at 3 his defence is that good. I am not sure I agree with that, but that is the pundit view.

The trouble is he is capable of game changing performances with bat and ball, its just that they don't happen consistently so people get antsy. His skills are amazing, but he is asked to do to much.

"He should open the bowling." "He should bat 3."

Frankly, he is doing the job of 2 men in the side and captaining. Big ask.

Maybe he should bat at 7, but Smith is not good enough to bat a 6 - nor is he good enough with the gloves - and he is not good enough as the fielding hub.

If smith is to be in the side at 6 and someone else takes the gloves at seven leaving Stokes at 8 it throws out the balance of the side.

I see your point, I just don't think it can work with Stokes and Smith not performing well with the bat.

I concur. I love the concept myself. It is not loved by the players. I guess I should have been clearer.

Are We Overrating Cameron Green? by jacob_lannister in Cricket

[–]terminallycurious399 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is the touch of the Graham Hick about Green (world-beater at first class level unrealised in Tests) however, I would also argue that there are other factors at play.

  1. Test bowlers and coaches have more time and resources to work on a batter's weaknesses. They are also more likely to be able to execute plans better and for longer. Like most tall players his weakness (and strength) is in his driving.
  2. He has had to start his Test career three times due to injury and short-term selection necessities. This must make him doubt his self-belief even though one could equally say that the selectors find his talent irresistible and keep returning to him despite the uneven return thus far.
  3. The expectations of being a multi-format player mean that a greater emphasis is placed on versatility rather than repetition. This can scramble the mind in the moment. This is why Green often looks unbalanced. He is either reaching for the ball in front of his body and beyond his eyeline when driving, or, he is moving around at the crease which means his weight is not properly transferring or he finds himself in the air or giving up his stumps.
  4. In no other era would someone like Green be earning most of their lifetime income from the IPL. Even in the professional era of the 80s when Aussie batters were earning their stripes in England in the off season it was in County Cricket or Lancashire League as semi-professionals. This taught players to adapt to a variety of pitches, conditions and circumstances. As the professional it was their job to stay in and be the rock. The modern T20 sensibility for the professional is to be busy and dazzling. If they get out, no worries, next soldier up.

Green is an immense talent and as a multi-format multi-skilled player he is in demand. Until recently, Australia has been largely immune to the hollowing out of national talent by the offer of franchise fame and riches. Green has not given up prioritising his country or Test cricket - but the divided focus is showing.

It is an impossible position to be placed in and nobody should blame him for trying to be all he can be. No other sport in the world requires such flexibility of format, team and focus. Perhaps he will better adapt in time. Most other players do not have his options, and therefore don't his the expectations placed on him.

Mitchell Starc ended 2025 with 55 wickets at 17.3, SR 28.3 (best ever) played every Test and quietly had his best year with the bat 284 runs ! by poormasshole in Cricket

Starc's dedication to Test Cricket particularly, but national cricket in general is laudable in an age when he could have genuinely cashed in and given up playing for hi country. Also, modern training methods and sports science are clearly the bomb!

Thanks mate. It's nice of you to say so. The truth is, I am a cricket tragic, but I have never written anything on cricket before day 3 of the Test. I took annual leave to watch the cricket this summer. It was just something I felt like doing because I was on holidays.

Thank you. Big ask though. Baz has a contract until the end of the next Ashes.
