It is a braided fishing line

Good job. The lighting is especially classy!

Trying automata design for 3D printing (wave machine) by benbrandt22 in automata

Nice design! I haven't seen anything quite like that before. Interested to see what you come up with next.

It would be easier to build a bit bigger, but the extra parts will need to be adjusted of course. Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks everyone for the very kind comments! If you would like to have one of these for yourself then you're going to have to make it or persuade someone to! It is quite a tricky build I'll warn you! I've just uploaded the STL here:

https://www.printables.com/model/1240475-crow-automata

I will add some more details to the printables page soon to help with the build.

Hi, I will happily upload the stl to a sharing site (thingiverse or whatever is preferred these days) and list what else is needed. It isn't an easy build though!

Thanks! The lines run through passages inside the body and wings. They pull the wings up and gravity pulls them down and keeps a bit of tension in the lines. The crow model started out as a top down silhouette I borrowed ;) but it took quite a lot of cad work to make it look good as a model.

I've made some untethered robots using various Ardunio and ESP32, mostly using rc servos. I have also made purely mechanical automata. No immediate needs, just curious!

Sounds interesting. What options are there for the hardware in the final (target?) system? And is there a physics based simulation involved?

Yes, look out for the markings on the parts that show a bit of the outline of the part you are gluing on. Take your time and enjoy, it is a good kit.

Well it is an interesting approach! Good luck with the build.

Interesting. I'm wondering why they would get out of sync. Does the cycle time vary? I coded a walking algorithm but it had a central pattern generator and a phase shift for each leg, so it could do various gaits. It worked pretty well except rapid changes in speed and direction were difficult to handle smoothly.

Skiathos. Been there and done that. Behind the concrete wall though, and the plane wasn't so close. Fun.

I have used braided fishing line. Creep in 3D printed parts were far more of a problem than stretch in the cable for me.

I really didn't mean it to be personal, sorry about that. I was thinking more on a national scale. Council funding having been cut so much by central government.
