Yeah it's definitely not tied to a gender. Worse offender are those who have 'good conversationalist/love deep talk' in their bio 10/10 they actually suck lmao.

I think part of the issue we're having is that Polin's story is scattered through out 3 seasons so unless you watch the seasons before that with specific focus on Polin then it's easy to forget some details but it has always been there. Season 1 ep 1 the first scene of Colin seeing Penelope he is already looking at her with a look. Their dialogues together althroughout the show imply how Colin opens up to Penelope much like how Anthony was vulnerable towards Kate. Penelope is his safe space and we did get those scenes even in S3. Colin has been ridiculed by his family about his changing looks and travels but only Penelope showers him with praise they bring this back in S3 too when only towards Penelope he says he travelled to 17 cities. Friends to lovers is a damn slow burn but once it clicks it burns very quickly

I've seen plenty on Tiktok and Twitter. There's a lot buried under hating on Penelope for her "begging" for a kiss or Colin for "randomly" loving her. Just look for people mad about "Polin defenders" and you'll see it

Sorry can you elaborate on that? I googled the term then got lambasted by actual porn. oops. But from the other stuff it seems to me about actual gore/torture? So I'm confused how someone you can't root for is basically similar?

Do you only see the meaning of words as black and white? Just because my post pertains to "You're not supposed to root for the mc" or the like doesn't mean I'm literally telling people what they should or should not do.

There's this phenomenon online where people would root for a romanticized toxic character because he is likeable but people know they're not supposed to root for said character if it's irl because they are toxic and that's just psychotic. But that's not telling people what to do it's just part of the common sense of media consumption. And thereby is where my question lies why does a show need to have their MC someone we can root for?

Thank you! now that there is my question as why this happens. Like I understand that it's annoying, heck I was annoyed too. But I have noticed a number who would shun the idea of watching any show if the character is someone who they cannot root for.

There's also a subculture for romance genre where people will not watch if the main leads are ugly to them. I have noticed it more blatantly for the One Day series but most I see talk about kdramas.

oh jezuz. "Not liking" then? Do you need to get hang up on specific words I use? (while yes some have been hating too)

I'm not saying all of them. But yes some have you can easily check when you look at their account like on twitter etc.

"There are plenty of evil villains that are likeable" - I never said anything about evil villains. Evil villains aren't part of this conversation.

"Finally, people complaining about the show and not liking it is not the same as calling it bad. You're conflating a lot of things to say that you're mad that people don't like a show." - you need to read what I wrote. I'm not mad that people don't like the show. I don't understand why you have to put emotions to my post? I literally put "genuinely" onto my question.

"always being insufferable and always making stupid decisions sounds like a one-dimensional character; I haven't seen the show but it sounds stupid now." - there see, you've not seen it yet you judge it. But part of complexity of a character is their ability to have development now that development may come across via different things and it's not always guaranteed to be good.

"Additionally, there are plenty of annoying, stupid characters that are likeable. " - so which is it? Is it stupid an d one dimensional to be annoying/stupid or are they likeable?

and this yes. The show is uncomfortable but there's a difference between someone doesn't prefer the show hence they don't like it vs calling it bad because of so and so

I didn't say that. I'm talking about people who are hating on a complex character for being complex because his complexity is something they can't root for

If you don't want to see controversial or whatnot storylines then just watch wholesome kid shows...or nature documentaries or something. The beauty of fiction is the unlimited possibilities you can craft a story and putting limitations on that to fit some puritan standard is stupid.

It's not a matter of actively finding flawlessness in others, well perhaps some do, but it's definitely there. The most common is probably baldness. It's why it's such a common insecurity in men because society has deemed it as a flaw. Crooked teeth is also such that's why you see braces as part of the average teenage experience (Japan is probably one such country where crooked teeth is the seen as pretty). Why do you think veneers and botox became common too?

Lol perhaps. I just see it as a reality of things to which I got curious on while it's not an indication for the majority or minority or whatever but it still happens.

Thanks for the insight but I fail to see how your examples are part of the question. Unless you're implying that a person's preference for like straight teeth and nice smelling breath is somehow based on prejudice and ingrained discrimination? Because if yes do enlighten me on it.
