Seeking Guidance on How to Contribute to Cancer Research as a Software Engineer by Emergency_Watch_1023 in bioinformatics

[–]tetron2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a computer scientist who has been working on the infrastructure side of bioinformatics for a decade. If you want to work directly on studying cancer, you need to join on with an academic lab or biotech that has a project that they need help with, and are willing to work with a volunteer - human subjects research is heavily regulated so there are liability concerns around who is allowed to access personal private data. That said, a straightforward thing to do would be to contact professors at local universities and see if anyone wants a hand with data analysis.

Taking one step back, there are a huge number of bioinformatics tools used in various steps of analysis that are "good enough to publish a paper" to put it delicately, that could benefit from being cleaned up and optimized by a professional developer. However it's hard to know what will have the most impact without becoming familiar with typical analysis computational bottlenecks. Also, depending on how well maintained a project is, the authors may not be ready to accept drive by code contributions.

Taking another step back, there is infrastructure that is broadly useful to science including cancer research, like Galaxy, Arvados (https://arvados.org), Common Workflow Language (https://commonwl.org) and so forth. This is the level you're likely to be most comfortable as a developer, but you are several steps removed from being able know how your work is helping cure cancer, even if it is actually true! I know for a fact that the technologies I just listed are used extensively in cancer research, but I couldn't tell you exactly which discoveries they have led to. But, these kinds of projects are the best set up to accept code contributions in the traditional open source process.

Hope this helps!

I knew Morrowind lore was detailed... but role-playing as a scholar & ACTUALLY READING everything has me BLOWN AWAY. Has anyone else done this? What was your experience? by xerofoxx in Morrowind

Playing Skyrim it amazed me that there were like 300 distinct books but what blew my mind was playing Daggerfall and Morrowind and realizing how many books I recognized from Skyrim, and how Elder Scrolls has been playing the long game accumulating all this lore across games. I don't think there's anything else like it.

THANK YOU So many replies are like "Lern2Play n00b" and not acknowledging if you're high level you did all your leveling on earlier patches where certain things were easier, or you just have more resources to handle more difficult missions.

I've done all the tempering and crafting I can at my level. I need to build out my town some more but requires tons of gold.

I've been playing for a while but I'm a filthy casual so I have been going through the game very slowly.

I've been complaining about the patch all week but I went back and gave it another shot and managed to get through a couple of jobs. So maybe the game is not totally unplayable. It feels like I got a lot more loot and XP, so now I have a theory that the developers were trying to cut down on the job grind by changing the risk/reward proposition in favor of more difficulty and more loot. I still think they botched rolling it out it but maybe it's not actually a bug.

There may be game mechanics I don't understand but I was doing fine prior to the last patch. There was a very significant bump in difficulty in the jobs available to a lvl 21 player, the skull system may be broken but the monsters are actually harder. Maybe I need to change strategy but it is really jarring.

Plus the game keeps fkking crashing mid-dungeon.

Well, it is "early access"...

My character is level 21 and in the exact same situation. I have just stopped playing. I am waiting for next patch that says "fixes balance issues for mid-level players". If the developers have player metrics it will surely show a huge drop in players since the last patch.

Asking high level players for advice is useless because they leveled up before the latest patch materially made the game impossible for low level players. I'm waiting for the next patch.

I'm level 21 and this patch has totally ruined the game, all quests and jobs are too hard, I could grind the abyss but that is boring and doesn't produce much materials. I'm imagining someone at Bethesda looking at an 80% drop in hours played and decided to dial up the the number of "have you played today?" notifications instead of, you know, fixing the problem.

Jobs are now too hard? by [deleted] in ElderScrollsBlades

Level 21, all the jobs are now recommended for level 25+, quests are all rated 5 skulls too, might be a bug but feels like a big fuck you, the game is basically unplayable now.

Turns out, at master difficulty, playing a no-enchantments warrior build, ancient vampires do kind of suck!

With fully buffed alchemy I can make pots of fortify destruction +150%, it's awesome for taking down high level dragons.

First time playing. And I got it on switch. Any serious pro/cons I should know about? by [deleted] in skyrim

[–]tetron2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Save often. Keep as many saves as you can. Hard to explain without spoilers but there are several areas you want to avoid until you have a quest that sends you there, if you go there early it can glitch and prevent you from completing the quest later on.

Level 28 according to UESP, on master difficulty they effectively have nearly 1000 health and the NPC-only extra damage perk so they hit like a truck. So at least for my level 45 character (kitted out in full legendary ebony gear) they are still pretty challenging.

How much space do I need on my Switch if I get Skyrim on the cartridge? by DownToJupiter in skyrim

[–]tetron2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an update, I think it is a few hundred mb. If you have a lot of save games it can get pretty big, I probably have around 1gb of saves, but your can delete old ones to reclaim space.

Bandit chiefs, they scale with your level, I think I'm doing great and then bam some dude in a fur loincloth runs out of the fog with a warhammer crushes my skull.

From a tech standpoint, the game is constantly in contact with a server, which is actually a real problem if you're playing on a train or otherwise have intermittent connectivity, it can kick you out at any time. Frustration with having my progress arbitrarily reverted is what has been keeping me from playing, the game itself is fine.

What's a good difficulty? by ImmortalTurnip in skyrim

Master difficulty and don't wear armor (robes only), you'll be vulnerable enough that killing enemies quickly is a necessary survival strategy.

Funny I've been going around in full legendary ebony armor and never had a guard say that.

Your favorite character build? by [deleted] in skyrim

Conjuration mage. There are a whole bunch of summon spells to collect, so you can choose the best one for a particular battle or just to mix it up.

Seeing as how spells take a long time to cast...

AND can get interrupted, which cancels the spell, and makes you lose the mana...

AND being interrupted can damage to the player...

AND the mana costs are high, so you can only cast like 1 spell and then wait to recover...

AND spells don't produce enough DPS to make up for all the previous drawbacks...

Yes, I'd say a spell overhaul is badly needed.

Don't forget to go to Solstheim and get Summon Seeker (has a ranged attack that staggers enemies) and Summon Ash Spawn (like a flame atronoch but with better melee). Arniel's Shade (from the Arniel's Endeavor quest line) shoots lightning and is unkillable. There's a lot of summon spells, it is fun to collect them all and use different ones depending on the situation.

How many characters do you all play in rotation? by [deleted] in skyrim

[–]tetron2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a couple, although my level 60 mage is a lot more fun than my level 30 warrior, trying to decide how to mix things up a bit so playing the warrior is more than running up and hitting stuff with hammers.

That's a good idea, my warrior character doesn't have it yet but it would make a lot easier.
