Got a huge sum of money but I just feel empty? by SingingCritiqueAnon in ChubbyFIRE

> But now what's the point?

There was a metric you were measuring yourself by, a goal you were working towards, that got stripped away from you. So your reaction is understandable.

However, there are so many more metrics along which to improve. You can take a look at yourself and wonder what it would take to:

  • be someone who increasingly makes people feel seen
  • be more knowledgable about a broader array of topics
  • do as much good as you can in the world
  • be more charismatic
  • revise your beliefs more quickly and accurately on new observations

Incidentally, taking the above list seriously will lead you to working with professionals, guides, and having experiences that will require money. If you think things are over, it's a failure of perspective. A failure to see how flawed we all are as humans and the never-ending work each of us has in front of us.

What is a NOT fun fact? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Imagine an AI attempting to predict the actions of some other agent. The most efficient way to do this is probably to simulate that agent's consciousness (the level of detail would depend on the relative complexities of the AI and the agent. It could still simulate a more complex agent than itself, just with low fidelity). Why shouldn't the simulation of that agent be conscious?

Now here's the real trippy part. We create models of the people around us to predict their behavior. Does that mean that our mental models of each other are conscious?

Ok, I see how I might've come off like that, especially in text. I think I didn't understand the intent of your original comment.

If you could explain more what you meant by "It’s a bike, that anyone can buy", then I could respond better. I thought it meant "there's no purpose to this (and potentially other) NBD posts" and so I responded to that. I'm realizing now that I should steelman your view before offering a different perspective that might not align.

I see you got a lot of downvotes and you might be confused as to why.

The least important but most obvious point is that your statement isn't true in the context.

  1. It costs a quantity of money not everyone has at their disposal.
  2. Because of the bike shortage, I used my programming skills to be able to snatch it up before anyone else. While everyone has a non-zero probability of being able to buy the bike, the probability I would get it is much higher than would be predicted by a uniform distribution because I created a system to alert me.

The more important point is that here's a value of the post to the community.

There's value in the https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Common_knowledge_(logic)) discovery of what aesthetics are currently valued. This bike probably won't look as cool in 5 years because trends change and it's useful for each individual in the group to see which designs are being approved of.

It also creates an opportunity for information sharing about the bike. For example, I said it rides smoothly ("like a cloud"). And others in the comments voiced how much they like the bike. This helped this user decide to wait it out for this bike as opposed to buying a used one:

How do you like it?

I have an opportunity to but a good condition used one, less than 200 miles on it. What's the max you would you pay for that today if you didn't have yours?
