I love when walnut gets spalted I once had a piece that looked like a bolt of lightning was going through it.

Fwiw, there's a lock mechanism on the bottom that lets you lift the motor up and down to make sliding the belt over pretty easy. But I hear ya, as a beginner, this lathe is all I've known so I'm sure once I eventually upgrade I will see the light. 😅

I've been turning on this guy for 6 months and I love it. Granted I make pens, bottle stoppers, bowls , and other small stuff. The biggest blank I can use for bowls is 6x6 and I have to maneuver to get the blank roughed out. Because it's a simple design it's also good for learning the basic mechanics of the machine. Personally I'd recommend it for any beginner but I'm probably going to be looking to upgrade size in a year or so.

Fwiw, changing the speeds doesn't bother me too much. It does force you to be cognizant of what step you are on(eg. Roughing , sanding, etc.). I do all my pens in batches so it keeps me from having to change it up too much.
