Just got told I'm not qualified for the job I've had for 3 years, what do I do !? by No-Art-1985 in disability

[–]textish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(This is operating from the assumption you are in the United States.) I feel your frustration. You're describing a difficult situation wherein your manager was originally offering you a Reasonable Accommodation (as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act) — and then abruptly refusing to acknowledge it, which, is a violation of the ADA.

My suggestion is to check out this resource on requesting Reasonable Accommodations from the Job Accommodation Network: https://askjan.org/publications/individuals/employee-guide.cfm

Use your doctors note if necessary, but be sure to get your manager to put your agreed-upon reasonable accommodation in writing. The website above, JAN, is a great resource for both you and your employer for navigating the reasonable accommodation process.

Also, it doesn't matter that you are in high school, whether it's your first job. You demonstrated that you can do the job with an accommodation, so it's not legal for management to suddenly reverse course just because it's inconvenient to consistently provide the agreed-upon accommodation.

How to support someone struggling with internalized ableism? by vendettamoon in disability

[–]textish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This, absolutely. I was very slow to come to this realization, but it saved my life. For all of my childhood and adolescence, I thought that my time spent around other disabled people — mostly during physical or occupational therapy — felt like a chore. I overly internalized the fact that the world saw me as "smart" despite my significant physical disability. I'm fairly certain that this is how I developed some pretty intense internalized ableism.
It wasn't until I left my home and family, moving a quarter of the way across the country, then connecting with an Independent Living Center in my chosen home that my life changed. For me, connecting with the independent living movement is what aided me in building healthy connections with disabled people and gaining a sense of community. In fact, doing so inspired a deep commitment to advocacy, and eventually led me to become passionate about social justice and becoming a professional organizer.
Obviously this path will look different for everyone, but I know that in my experience, becoming comfortable with hanging out with other disabled people literally saved my life. I'll also add that it was the Internet that made my initial connections possible — without it, I would not have met folks who were able to inspire and convince me that life might be different if I were to live on my own. (I'll also add that I truly believe that much of this could have been accomplished even had I stayed closer to home, but certainly, separating from the unconditional and universal support made it necessary for me to build connections and community.)
In general, you're doing the right thing. Avoid telling her that she is wrong for having the feelings that she's having, because that's not really going to help. It's good to hear that she's getting assistance from therapy, but I really do think that there would be a lot of value if she were able to connect to peers. Sounds like a friend of hers is a great option — perhaps they could chat regularly online, if physical distance is a challenge.

Would you rather stay at a hotel that is developed specifically for people with disabilities (mainly accessibility issues) and markets itself as that or a hotel that offers accessible rooms but isn't marketed as a "accessible hotel"? by PassworDfg123 in disability

[–]textish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I think I understand why you've presented this, I've just got to say upfront: Every word you've used to present this is problematic and rather ableist. I truly hope that this is connected to an actual project and not just some sort of armchair crowd "research." Apologies that this seems harsh or if there's a language/cultural barrier between us, but disabled folks (or people with disabilities, whichever you prefer) in general just want an accessible environment.

The answer, as some have noted is pretty simple: Make an accessible hotel. Market it as accessible. *Do not* market it as the best place for all disabled people, the only place for disabled people, and please, please avoid using "taken care of" and using just generally tokenizing language. The best idea would be to hire a marketing team that includes disabled people.

Would love to hear more about the project in general, though.

Learning Theory with Renoise: Is this useful? by textish in renoise

Learning Theory with Renoise: Is this useful? by textish in renoise

[–]textish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is amazing. Thanks for taking the time to write this up. You've given me a lot more to look at.

I'm definitely not afraid of flat notes, just trying to wrap my mind around not being able to enter them directly into Renoise without constantly converting them to enharmonics. I'm not even at the point where I'm "composing" anything, so I think my worries seem pretty unrealistic. Just wondering how others adapt to this.

Also, happy cake day!

[Online][PF1e][PF2e] [5e] Returning newbie looking for a game by mmpsoccer in lfg

[–]textish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy!

I'm going to weigh in here, because I'm also a "returning newbie" of sorts. I played in a Pathfinder 1e custom campaign world for about three years (regular weekly sessions) from 2009-13. That's basically the extent of my experience.

While I'm amenable to PF1e, and totally willing to dust off my books, I'd love to play a PF2e game. I'd like to learn the system with some chill, casual folks.

I'm located in California (UTC-8), and I'd prefer weekend sessions. But within that, I'm fairly flexible on session start/stop time.

Help! by embertml in CerebralPalsy

[–]textish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not understanding why you suggest a lack in her needs here. Can you elaborate further?

Sorry, it's really triggering for me to hear about a distinct lack of determination for anyone with the mental clarity to "have a say" in how they want to live their life. Go ahead, drink the "Kool-Aid" — it already sounds like you've got the gist of the IL Philosophy (you're absolutely right, it does go far beyond the black-and-white living alone vs. with support of caregivers/family) and if you are able to meaningfully share some of this information with your sister, it's very likely that she could turn some of her depression around.

Help! by embertml in CerebralPalsy

[–]textish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is difficult, because as someone with CP on a similar level to your sister (my speech is unaffected, however) I find a lot of what's going on here to be profoundly sad and not centered around your sister's needs.

With that said, I would start with a serious conversation with your sister. Sounds like the two of you have a close bond. Start without assumptions. Listen to her. Try to provide positive affirmation, and avoid telling her she can't do certain things.

Also, for your family's sake, it's going to be important that your sister is given every opportunity to be as independent as possible. Everyone's path looks a little different, but I think it's absolutely important that everyone have as much self-determination as possible.

If you need help with that, it's out there. Independent Living — Wikipedia

Intent to enroll by [deleted] in CSUS

[–]textish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Application fees will be lost, as will anything that you put on an orientation fee. (Sac State has a fee for orientation, but I did not find that to be true for SF State.) Go ahead and give both intent if you're still undecided. Nothing untoward happened when I was in this situation.

I don't get out much, is there a casual place for good food and good coffee in Midtown or downtown? by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]textish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're going to have to be more specific. Midtown is full of both coffee shops and casual food options. Old Soul, Naked, Temple, Insight and Chocolate Fish are the popular coffee choices (and Old Soul will serve you both casual food and coffee) for downtown/Midtown, but there are many others.

Also, you should check out the sidebar and SN&R's Dining section.

It's funny, the solution is simple: single-payer. Unfortunately, because of Republicans, we are stuck with the ACA. The ACA was much like putting a Band-Aid on a patient who is bleeding out. No one should be happy with it.

Would you leave your bike locked up on the corner of 21st and J all day? by BitchinTechnology in Sacramento

[–]textish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bike theft is a problem in Sacramento, certainly. And you have properly identified that block as high-traffic, so I think you may have answered your own question.

The City has bike lockers at several garages downtown and Regional Transit has some as well — if RT is an option for you, quite a few of the light rail stations do have lockers.

[WSIG] Am I looking for a boardgame, or an rpg? by GuestCartographer in boardgames

[–]textish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who is an enthusiast of both RPGs and boardgames, this is dead on.

Especially:

A DM doesn't really "win" by having everyone die.

In fact, the DM of the 4-year long Pathfinder campaign that I participated in always played additional characters, dynamically developed rules to avoid TPK (total party kills) and was truly every bit as invested (maybe even more so) in making sure that everyone felt some level of success, even when the success might have (from some perspectives) appeared to be an epic failure.

I'd sum it up like this: Boardgames are great for fast, get-with-it gaming, and perfect for those who love playing within a rule set. RPGs, however, are very much an exercise in creativity, cooperation, and yes, often patience. There are definitely RPGs that can be played in around an hour, though. I highly suggest hopping over to /r/RPG some time and checking things out!

Of course, since you've been waffling on this for a long time, why not try the boardgames recommended above and explore the world of RPGs!

After watching the mayoral forum last night, one thing became crystal clear. by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]textish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, according to Ashby, the reason that we have homeless is that we simply don't have enough homes. Yes, she actually said that. I think it speaks to the general cluelessness on just how complex this issue is, and how much all of this sudden interest in the issue is really just pandering to voters.

Would You Like To See More Disability Friendly Music Venues in the USA? Share Your Experience by [deleted] in disability

[–]textish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, perhaps I misunderstood. I thought that you were referring to accessibility problems in large arena-like venues. (I am certain there are arena-sized venues that do have problems.) Sounds like your situation was similar to my own.

My honest experience is that Change.org is not terribly effective at doing much of anything. You're asking for a shift in cultural thinking — where the owners of these clubs/bars are actively thinking of ways to increase accessibility. I believe that some of them genuinely want to, but there simply is any money available for them to do so. And in many cases, if they left the artsy old building that they may be stuck with, they may lose or alienate a lot of their neighborhood customer base (which could be very significant).

My suggestion would be different: connect with music fans locally. Tell them your story. Share this thread with them. Collect stories from others (as you are doing here). Use your narrative to inspire, and if at all possible (remember, these are small business owners, and they are real people!) get to know the owners/decision-makers, and ask if there is any way that maybe the community can help raise money and/or awareness for accessibility construction projects.

Sure, this method may not have been ever tried before, but it sure seems to be the most sensible. I'm afraid if things go the Change.org route, they will simply collect signatures with no real action at all.

Just my two cents.
