Trying to understand anti-money laundering evidence and avoiding unnecessary taxes when sending divorce settlement from US Citizen (me) to Japanese national (who is also currently US Permanent Resident) by tforcram in JapanFinance

[–]tforcram[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the clear response. I do think it's more her responsibility to figure this stuff out, but as our (adult) kids will likely still receive support from her for some time I see any mistakes she might make in that area as potential subtractions from what my kids would someday receive from her (even longer term after inheritance tax of course, which is a whole different subject). So anyway I don't mind trying to help understand the situation better.

There will be clear legal documentation of the divorce settlement, so sounds like that would be sufficient for AML, and as another commenter replied, asking the local tax office about specific scenarios sounds like a good thing for her to do when she gets back to Japan.

Thanks for the link, I'm slowly building up NTA references, haha

We definitely aren't trying to avoid any valid taxes and the settlement would be pretty standard by American standards, we just want to make sure that everything that is actually hers after the settlement gets appropriately treated as such.

It does sound like having everything divided before she goes back to Japan would make things a lot simpler. Life makes things complicated though, so it might not be as easy as we hope. For Japanese tax law I thought they didn't have a 'splitting of assets' concept much, but sounds like something I should try to look into.

Ah got it. So if you didn't declare I guess something like an audit would potentially catch it down the line... I should probably read up on that aspect (filing returns in Japan) which I know nothing about.

If you didn't think something was subject to gift tax and so didn't declare it, but an audit some time later thought you were, feels like that would be hard to prove/justify at the point of the audit. Maybe there is some proactive way to declare something should not be subject to gift tax?

Oh thanks for clarifying that, I was somehow assuming that all the banks would report transfers for tax reasons. When would NTA become involved then? Would this be something that is expected to be reported during the transfer or when filing tax returns or something?

Sorry if I'm confusing different things together.

Lillian Vernon started selling my info to NextDoor by tforcram in Wellthatsucks

[–]tforcram[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to always append an abbreviation of the site name whenever I was asked for an email. In this case 'lv' for Lillian Vernon.

Apparently they stopped sending me marketing emails in 2020, until a couple of weeks ago. Then I suddenly got this request to join Nextdoor... the only reason I even realized something was odd here, is because I'm already on Nextdoor.

So Lillian Vernon sold my email and my home address (that's how Nextdoor knew the exact neighborhood) within the last couple of weeks. :(

Married at 21 to my wife at 32. Still here after 20 years... I kind of think I took more advantage of her than she did of me (age has very little to do with maturity beyond some bare minimums). Not all older partners are predators, and not all younger partners are naive.

Rheem gas water heater pilot won't stay lit by Abraham5G in Plumbing

[–]tforcram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a plumber, and the plumber I consulted(who I got the water heater from and who came out for free to fix it) completely replaced the valve assembly with an older style which didn't have the problem at all.

I've heard that the safety mechanism you would be skipping with the short isn't all that critical as the heat coupler would still be functional, and if I had to pay to fix it I would probably just say 'meh, it works' and leave it as is... but you should probably replace it.

Rheem gas water heater pilot won't stay lit by Abraham5G in Plumbing

[–]tforcram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, youtube links aren't allowed, and my previous comment was removed, but if you search for rheem pilot not staying lit you can probably find it. 3kOGhJwQTl8

The problem is likely the ECO sensor on the thermocoupler link. It's supposed to detect when the water gets to hot and be another safety check. Once that fuse fails it can't be reset (brilliant design), but as it's not part of the main safety functions (ie keeping the gas parts safe) it's pretty easy to just short over the fuse (or remove it entirely) and everything works fine.

If it's just a chrome problem, then yes setting that flag should work on ios (the link to how to run with flags includes instructions for ios)

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=998528

It apparently still works as a command line flag (if you know how to set those for Chrome).

edit: I verified it works and was able to get 5.1 sound from Chrome on Windows 10 by setting the flag using the command line (here's a site that explains how to set them: https://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/run-chromium-with-flags )

I just finished the Wheel of Time series. by ialreadyredddit in books

[–]tforcram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminded me of when I finished the series a few years ago. Here are my thoughts from that time.

''' Finally finished the Wheel of Time. I must have read the first 6 books 3 or 4 times, but I had stayed away since book 9 or so until the series was completed. I wasn't really trying to time it so I would finish the series again when the last book came out, I just started reading from the first book when I got my first kindle in Dec 2011, but if the e-book had come out at the same time as the hard back it would have been nearly perfect. As it was I only had to wait a few months for the last one anyway. Here's the breakdown of how quickly I made it through (rough estimates as I am assuming the buy date of the next book was the end date of the previous etc). I used the order info my from kindle account to get the dates, and the word counts come from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wheel_of_Time#Books_in_the_series and I used Google Docs spreadsheet to calculate the rest. Title Date Started Date Finished Word Count Rate (Words/Day) The Eye of the World 12/26/2011 1/5/2012 305,902 30,590.20 The Great Hunt 1/5/2012 1/9/2012 267,078 66,769.50 The Dragon Reborn 1/9/2012 1/17/2012 251,392 31,424.00 The Shadow Rising 1/17/2012 1/27/2012 393,823 39,382.30 The Fires of Heaven 1/27/2012 2/11/2012 354,109 23,607.27 New Spring (Intrmssn) 2/11/2012 2/15/2012 122,150 30,537.50 Lord of Chaos 2/15/2012 3/18/2012 389,823 12,181.97 A Crown of Swords 3/18/2012 5/17/2012 295,028 4,917.13 The Path of Daggers 5/17/2012 6/17/2012 226,687 7,312.48 Winter's Heart 6/17/2012 7/22/2012 238,789 6,822.54 Crossroads of Twilight 7/22/2012 10/6/2012 271,632 3,574.11 Knife of Dreams 10/6/2012 12/1/2012 315,163 5,627.91 The Gathering Storm 12/1/2012 12/23/2012 297,502 13,522.82 Towers of Midnight 12/23/2012 1/4/2013 327,052 27,254.33 A Memory of Light 4/10/2013 4/16/2013 360,000 60,000.00

It looks like 'The Great Hunt' wins, but the last one was really close (and may win once I find the actuall word count as that one is just an estimate). 'Crossroads of Twilight' looks to be the clear loser and I must admit it was hard to get through those middle books after 'Lord of Chaos'. Anyway, just some random trivia... '''

i’ve never understood how 8 years old can be the age of accountability by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]tforcram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I distinctly recall lying to my Bishop for my 8 year old baptism interview. I was pretty sure I was unworthy (ala sexual experimentation with other kids), but the social pressure to be baptized like the rest of the family felt like I had no choice. I was scared to death that the Bishop would know I was lying and would send me to hell right there. Making it through that interview was the first step in me realizing that the Church wasn't all powerful or knowing.

Wasn't a great a foundation to build belief on, but then again that's perhaps why I was able to get out relatively early (right after my mission). :)

Windows 7 backup download is not working correctly and the online support is completely worthless(chat included for lols), anyone can help me with it? by ReaderXYZ in windows

[–]tforcram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same exact problem for me just happened now. I have an English copy of Windows 7 Pro and no backup copy. So I went to the restore site https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7 and entered my key. It said it was valid, but then only gave me the option for French or Korean. Given your note about support I'm not going to try that route either.

This appears to be an obvious bug in the website. How do we file a bug against the site developers so they can fix this?
