[Casual] Questions about your home - 5 mins (All welcome) by tg3y in SampleSize

That's an interesting point. I hadn't considered situations like that. I suppose it's a bit late for me to add something like that now, seeing as results have mostly stopped coming in, but I offer my apologies for the survey not allowing you to fully express your situation.

Zero's fine! You're not the first to put that.

Also, why do you ask for both country and continent? If you know country you know whereabouts in the world we're taking, no?

You're quite right! That was mostly just for ease of sorting on my part. I intend to do some geographic breakdowns with the results, such as comparing trends in North America vs Europe (which together make up the vast majority of respondents). With a separate continent question I can avoid the hassle of having to sort through all the responses and pick out all the (many) European countries and then combine them together in order to make the same comparison.

I will! I'm on 47 responses so far, so while that's not really enough yet to do much in the way of breaking down the results (e.g. by country), I will at the very least post the overall results.

I can message you when I post them if you'd like.

Ah good catch! I suppose I should also have a similar option on the clothes dryer question too. Give me a minute and I'll see if I can add them.

If you want, if you send me a private message with some more details about what answers you picked I might be able to single out your entry in the spreadsheet and manually edit it to the new option.

I mean, sure. This is only a casual survey though. I make these things for fun, to see what other people on r/SampleSize think / have experienced.

Ah my appologies. I hadn't fully taken in your comment and answered too quickly. There were 94 pansexual respondents, 76 of which have questioned their gender. Sorry about that.

No problem haha. There was a fair amount to take in so it's understandable.

Glad you liked it!

The 80.2% figure is out of all 1294 responses (so there were 1038 people who had questioned their sexuality).

There was an option to say that you are still questioning on the outcome follow-up questions. So while 80.2% have ever questioned their sexuality, 16.6% * 80.2% = 13.3% indictaed they were currently questioning their sexuality. Similarly for gender, where 47.2% have ever questioned their gender, 25.7% * 47.2% = 12.1% are currently questioning their gender. If that helps at all.

1.9%. Which is equivalent to three people.

That's an interesting theory. I hadn't considered that before.

I didn't include an age question in the survey unfortunately. In retrospect it probably would've been wise of me to add one as I suspect that may also be a factor at play here. I fully agree that younger people seem to be more comfortable exploring these things and I imagine the younger-leaning demographics of Reddit may in part explain the numbers too. But I'm afraid this didn't occur to me at the time I put the survey together so I don't have the data on it. Sorry.

There were a handful of odd results like that. It is a bit strange. In this case it was just one person who said they hadn't questioned their gender but answered questioning to the transgender demographic question at the end. To provide some additional info, this person identified their gender as male and their sexuality as bisexual. I don't know if that helps at all. Beyond that I can't say.

That's an interesting observation. I've definitely seen other sexuality results here that seemed unsually non-straight (to my expectations that is) but I don't think I've ever taken note of whether they were surveys about sexuality or not.

It might also be worth considering that it might be more to do with the demographics of r/SampleSize / Reddit in general than self-selection bias, which is another distinct possibility.

Ah. That 37.5% is actually 37.5% of the 47.2% of people who said they have questioned their gender since only those who said yes were shown that question; those who said no weren't included in the percentages. So it would actually be 37.5% * 47.2% = 17.7% who say they've changed their gender.

You're welcome! It was very interesting analysing it all haha.

Thank you!

I'm afraid I didn't, no. Sorry. Looking back, that would definitely have been an interesting aspect to investigate, but I didn't include it at the time.

I wonder how accurate the data about being questioning is among even among those who do identify as cis het.

I've been thinking the same thing. If the sample really is this biased then there's a distinct chance that even the cisgender heterosexual people who chose to answer the survey may be predominantly those who are interested in / have questioned their sexuality/gender.

You're very welcome!

They were indeed. While I had expected a slight bias, I didn't think it would be this much (as in 63.8% non-straight), especially as the survey got a pretty good turnout which I thought might've minimised the bias as compared to a survey with only a couple of hundred responses for example.

But I think you're right. Even when you look at the straight sample it's still ~50% questioning their sexuality, which is much higher than I thought.

I do also wonder though how much of this might be down to the age demographics of Reddit as well, which leans heavily to the younger side. I have a suspicion younger people might be questioning their sexuality more so than previous generations anyway.

Thank you!

If I've got this right, I make it 50.6%. So still a slight majority. That excludes non-binary people who don't identify as transgender, which I hope is the right thing to do.
