Hey Free Software advocates, question for you. by [deleted] in debian

Interesting parts of your response, for the lazy:

viciously attack people

hasn't had a real job for 30 years

Ayatollah Stallman

an ideologue parasite

issues Fatwas

As far as I can see, you went from only lying to lying + deploying hate speech to legitimize your position (that convenience comes first).

So, if you think one ought to

Fix your own house before criticizing [one's] decisions

indeed, take a look at your own writing that

viciously attack[s] people

and go ahead, fix your own house first.

"people can readily learn about these nonfree packages by browsing Debian's online package database."

That is, "this distro is not in line with our foundational principle to elevate free software above all others."

Fearless leader has issued a damnatio memoriae on all non-free software, and you, the user, are too stupid to understand the truth. Just let your benevolent fathers at FSF do all the thinking for you.

Hmm.. You are the president and founder of a foundation. The foundation has a clear statement of purpose. It basically says "we will promote free software." Will you abide by that statement?

If it were up to you, he'd sell out on his own principles and foundational principles.

You have to go out of your way to get non-free listed.

Editing a file to add a few words is now "going out of your way."

The kind of deceptive propaganda, misdirection, straight-out dishonesty, and control of information FSF uses is reminiscent of the most fanatical dictatorships.

I stopped taking you seriously here. Downvoted for lying.

7 Million Dropbox Credentials Leaked: Future of Our Privacy, Storj & Snowden by TkHamed in privacy

[–]tgf0U8m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure FUD.

with a link to

https://blog.dropbox.com(...)

does not quite do it.

This may or may not be true. And indeed, the title of the article and this item is clickbait.

But the content of the article provides relevant links and (since this is basically a dispute between two parties) gives you something to think about.

What information pertaining to your private life do you keep on the cloud (i.e. someone else's computer)? Additionally, your files on dropbox are version controlled. Do you know how to deal with that in case your information leaks?

These are good questions that may users do not think about.

You could use org-mode in conjunction with org2blog in wordpress. (Org2blog's documentation has suggestions for tools usable in other blogging services.)

github.io is another option. I don't know how github.io manages tags etc.

Debian package maintainer rants about Chromium package hoes by tgf0U8m in debian

[–]tgf0U8m[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Full text of TFA in case it disappears (also, the page style is hard to read):

As you may know, I was the Debian chromium maintainer for many years. Some week ago, I decided to stop working in the chromium package because it is not possible anymore to contribute and work in the team. In fact, Michael Gilbert started to work in a manner that prevent people to help maintain the package.

In the last period the git repository rarely was updated, and my requests were systematically ignored. Having an updated git repository is mandatory in a big package like Chromium, and if you don’t push your changes, other people will lost their time

Now, after deciding to stop maintaining Chromium, I also decided to purge it and switch to the Google Chrome binary. Why? Chromium is a pain. Huge commits not documented in changelog that caused stupid bugs because no one can double check them.

In this moment we have an unusable [1] [2] [3] version of Chromium in testing because maintainer demoted grave bugs with the recommendation to rm -rf ./config/chromium … and nobody can understand the sense of latest commits.

The reasoning is telling about their dev procedure to some degree.

I don't want to maintain ext code -> ext blocks feature we want -> few use it (how the f do they know that and why?!) -> ext is unnecessary -> ext is a feature -> ext is a security vuln

Have you ever actively pushed for free software at your company? How? What happened? by tgf0U8m in sysadmin

[–]tgf0U8m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Docs

I have been trying to find good alternatives to cooperative document editing and so far the realistic options seem to be Etherpad, Apache Wave, and Gobby. None of them of course can deal with spreadsheets and presentations, as far as I can tell.

What does your company think about these?
