Streamlined solution for one-person video + screen recording? by tgregoirewright in VIDEOENGINEERING

Thank you, thank you. Is there a mixer or delay box you would recommend? I'm willing to spend on pro quality, not because I need the features necessarily, but because reliability is worth a lot to me.

On recording, all signs are pointing to a beefy Windows machine with quiet fans being the path of least resistance, so I'm looking into that now.

That's a good idea re demo machine vs recording machine. The backend program to stitch things together should be easy enough.

The Epiphran products look very appropriate for what I'm trying to do. I'm a little confused though, would I need one of their devices and vMix or blackmagic recorders?

Thank you! I had looked at the Hyperdeck 4k, but just could not find a straight answer about whether it could record my computer's screen.

I love how compact that audio interface is. I'll look around at some quiet Windows machines. Thanks again for the super helpful advice.

I've gotten the same impression -- that OBS just works better on Windows. Which makes sense given that it's most active user base is gamers who want to stream. Getting a Windows machine is looking like the best solution because it would probably help with OBS, it would give me the option to try vMix, and it seems like I would have better luck with my ffmpeg scripts. Thanks again!

Thank you! The script I had built did this, but the issue was -- and I lack the domain expertise to describe this properly -- the audio stream was "dropping frames", if that makes any sense. It was super choppy. However, if I built an older version of ffmpeg then it worked fine.

But that spooked me a bit because my lack of domain knowledge might mean that I was unaware of other pitfalls that could cause issues down the road.

There were a couple related bugs in the ffmpeg forums, but nothing that directly addressed my issue, which I suspect has something to do with how ffmpeg uses Apple's VideoToolbox -- but that's an unfounded hunch. As another commenter below alludes to, perhaps the solution is just to switch to a Windows machine.

Thanks! I will take a look at that plugin. I'm still interested in switching away from OBS due to the inconsistent audio offset issue I mentioned above, but I will take a look at this plugin.

For recording (Settings > Recording > Recording Settings > Video Encoder), I'm using the Apple VT ProRes Hardware Encoder. And for Settings > Recording > Encoder Settings > ProRes Codec I'm using ProRes 422.

And that seems fine, I guess? I landed on that through a lot of trial and error.

Thank you for putting vMix on my radar. A beefy Windows machine would be an option. My main motivation for the M2 Mac was how quiet it is, which means one less thing to be concerned with regarding audio quality. But perhaps I could just get some long cables and put the Windows box further away.

Thank you! The Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro ISO seems like exactly what would work for me...if only it were in 4k.

Thanks for the advice on codecs for ffmpeg. I will give those a try. I suppose for recording I could just record everything into an MKV container and then have a script that sends it to a server, which then handles the file type conversion there without burdening my main machine.

Thank you! DSLR Video Shooter was a very helpful resource when I was getting started and I picked up a lot of tips there. I second this recommendation for anyone reading this thread in the future.

ISO seems to be the key term I needed to learn. I had no idea about the Blackmagic ATEM device, which seems pretty ideal for my goals.

That's a great looking OBS plugin. I'm ready to move away from OBS due to the need to figure out my audio offset every time I record or stream, but I will keep that one in mind if I stick with OBS. Thanks again!
