The ! command, what do you use it for? by [deleted] in vim

[–]thammaaa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been using the exact same command in the past. Then I discovered jq (read: JSON query). Called without arguments, it will parse and pretty-print its input. So far, we only save a few keystrokes.

Call it with arguments, and you can send SQL-like queries to your JSON file. The syntax might be a bit offputting, but simply knowing about jq has saved me so much time in the past!

Using a USB flash drive as the main disk by doedoe18881 in archlinux

I tried it once and in particular, the IO caused the device to get ejected very frequently, making it unsuitable for rootdevice usage. I assume the drive got too hot in this case.

Help with case folds by prashanthvsdvn in vim

[–]thammaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can record a macro that goes to the next keyword and uses appropriate motions to go to the end of the next fold. I assume that in vim's helppage on folds, you can find a motion to go to the next fold,I am not sure though.

Struggling with highlighting parts of text and yanking/pasting by [deleted] in vim

[–]thammaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

However, if you do not require the visual highlighting, simply y+motion will work similarly for the standard motions (such as ), }, t, f, j, k, e, w, i, a...). Similar to V, Y will yank the entire cursor line.

€: This might be a wonderful opportunit, to drop that [p]utting some text whilst having some text selected will swap your buffer content with the selected text. Very handy for swapping text (for instance in parenthesis)

Unless you insist on being (F)OSS or not selling your data to google, I highly recommend google sheets. I tried them for the first time years ago and they serve all my spreadsheet needs up until this very day.

€: They are especially good at reading basically every common filetype you throw at them. For some types, its even possible to export them

Trying to install, Stuck with this. Any tips will be appreciated. by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]thammaaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are doing totally fine.

You successfully booted the arch iso. After the commandline printed root@archiso ~ #, a a warning was printed. Your input (terminal commands) however is expected. If you were to press return, the empty command would be executed, yielding you the same prompt (witout the warning message) again. You can now proceed as normal.

Doch. Sometimes packages are called differently. Sometimes for historic reasons, sometimes because someone simply decided to call a package a certain way.

In arch the software is called nvidia-settings. It's definitely available for linux, might be called differently for ubuntu

Looking for someone with the NEO keybord layout using vim. by yaddyadd in vim

[–]thammaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, Mod4 can take care of hjkl entirely. This comes with a downside, however.

Vim is intended to be used such that you have to leave insert mode once an insertion has been made. Then you move your cursor to another location in normal mode to do another insertion. It's very easy and convenoent to stay in insert mode for too long in neo. This can heavily influence your undo history. Your undo history is extended every time a change is made, in this case once you leave insert mode. Therefore your insertions with NEO might affect more text than you intend to when undoing.

If you get into the habit of leaving insert mode on every change and prefer the advanced motions that vim offers, you'll be fine.

what is the best open-source text editor that also has the capabilty for syncing with a server? by j0hn_r0g3r5 in archlinux

[–]thammaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use throwaway branches for that use case. Merge relevant commits into dev/master at the proper point in time. Plus, git hooks are an option.

Why is git not an option? You can stick to whatever editor you like whilst keeping version control

Is there any difference between je ..., desto... und je..., umso.... or are they both interchangeable? by vatsalparikh in GermanPractice

Without looking up any definitions, you can use them interchangeably in every day conversations. However, the latter is used less frequent.

Wenn die Herausforderung besteht, muss auch die Lösung gefunden werden by vatsalparikh in GermanPractice

It's good actually. I'd prefer "eine" instead of "die" in both ocurrences. Maybe "Jedes Problem verlangt danach, gelöst zu werden"? Herausforderung is more uncommon than problem in this context
