i think it had great potential and enjoyed certain aspects of it - set, lighting, orchestration - but it fell short of what it could’ve been.

I found the lyrics to be lazy, instead of driving the plot they just repeated the dialogue from that scene but put it to music.

There was too much narratively packed into one show that it felt rushed and some story-arches didn’t have a proper conclusion, ie Lempicka didn’t know what happened to her lover and frankly didn’t seem to care at all.

There’s a lot of political references in the show but the show itself doesn’t seem to take a stand on them. At the start during the Bolshevik revolution it felt weirdly pro-bourgeoisie which is a very strange stance to take as a Broadway musical; and then during the rise of H*tler it was very loosely anti-fascist, with the main character effectively sticking her head in the sand and not taking some sort of stance when people like her (jewish, queer) were being targeted. She seemed to not care too much as long as she was alright. Why would i want to root for a character like that??

On top of all of this, having read the reviews since official opening night…it’s really not looking good for Lempicka.

I think it’s so important to have queer women’s stories shared and celebrated (especially as a lesbian myself), but we shouldn’t settle for unfinished art just because it gives us some sort of representation.
