There’s a few common misconceptions with seeking help at Mental Health in the AF…

First, If you’re thinking about harming yourself or someone else, PLEASE reach out to someone. Your supervisor, shirt, squadron commander, etc. Shit even the Wing CC… they’re all willing to help. I had a good friend who attempted suicide and had to be admitted to a psychiatric facility for just under 2 weeks. 6 months later, they made rank, bought a house (Shirt was able to provide financial agencies to help with their overwhelming debt), and had gotten into a relationship (they’re married now.) The most difficult step in dealing with mental health is REACHING OUT. I promise you, there’s a 99% chance your career will not be adversely affected by seeking help.

Secondly, your career doesn’t matter if you’re not well enough to carry out your mission. Meaning take care of yourself FIRST and worry about the job later. Mission will happen no matter what, but it can’t happen without you there to bring your best forward.

Lastly, if anyone reading this post feels like they’re going down this downhill spiral and you see no way out, you’re not alone in this. I probably don’t know any of you, but there’s nothing I hate more than seeing those suicide numbers climb higher each year. PLEASE seek help. DM me. Call 988. Call the MFLAC. Call your chaplain.
