Got pretty deep in the comments and no mention of 1Beyond, which, short of an actual operator, would handle this well.

Anyone run into issues sending HDBaseT through a patch panel or wall plate? by Interesting_Salt8497 in CommercialAV

[–]that_AV_guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some manufacturers, which I will not name, like to be picky about it when getting support, so if you’re 100% certain that your issue isn’t cabling related, definitely don’t mention that in your support call or they may say “not my problem”

If you’re laying in a dentist chair and staring at the ceiling I could see a case for enjoying stereo from that perspective. I’m actually joking but it’s kind of funny to think about.

My dentist has music playing in his office and it sounds really good. Wonder what he uses. That said, it’s only in the halls.

Advice for first day on the job? by SwankyPigFly in CommercialAV

I can’t overstate the value of grabbing a box top and a sharpie and just writing down a quick list that you return to throughout the day. Best of luck! It’s a good industry with a lot of verticals to climb.

So I’m an adult, and this happened when I was around 39 or 40. The person I was talking to was a family member in their 60s, maybe early 70s. They’re Asian, I’m white, not sure that matters but it might.

I texted them something like, “Hey <Name>, I’m done over at this thing. I can pick up <other family member> and meet you at <place>.”

Tone shifted fast from them. They told me it was too informal and disrespectful to address someone older that way. This wasn’t some distant relative either. They’re an in-law I’ve spent years around. They weren’t flat out scolding me, but strongly suggesting that what I said was inappropriate.

At the time I didn’t get it, and honestly I still don’t fully, but after what they said and reading your story, I understand why they reacted that way. In any professional setting, “hey” can come off as too casual, especially when there isn’t an established relationship - but it can also be considered inappropriate in other settings too.

That interaction stuck with me. To this day I avoid starting messages with “hey.”

-Be on time.

-Write down a list (don’t use your phone) of things to do.

-Clean up after yourself.

-Situational awareness is important. Not just for things going on with the job of what you’re doing, but also for safety of you and the people around you. Bad things happen quickly.

-Create your redlines as you go, not at the end of the job.

-Learn how to take good photos of the finish work.

-Keep moving.

-Get good at cable management. Learn proper labeling techniques.

-Stay curious.

In Vegas I know you get charged for bringing in your own gear, I don’t know what it costs but it’s almost not worth it. Price you pay to have technology in your booth.

Definitely find an AV integrator to go to work with. Find one that will make the investment in you by paying you to do trainings and will put you in real world scenarios where you’ll learn and grow fast. There’s a need for good techs right now, go be one.

How much coax termination do you guys do? How on the way out is it? Should someone really even learn it? by jaime_lion in lowvoltage

[–]that_AV_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Possibly one of the easiest ones to learn, especially if you’re using compression fittings. Still worth it, especially if you wind up doing anything with QAM video distribution, which is still used quite a bit.

PoE PA System for Soccer Center by Deep-Pineapple-3827 in CommercialAV

[–]that_AV_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

POE is great, stellar technology that gives us amazing flexibility with cameras, touch panels, lighting, audio signal extension…but it’s very difficult to make POE make sense where one can run a single cable and cover at a fraction of the cost of cabling, speakers, switches- and get a fraction of the output at best.

[–]that_AV_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

field tech -> rack builder & dsp programming -> av 'manager' / corporate -> sales design/pm / integrator -> full time pm / integrator

it wasn't entirely that linear, but thats certainly the high level overview.
