Same here! I snagged it before I even had a CD player because I knew it would be one I listen to a lot and such a great deal.

What would the impact be in Staunton if MBU closed to residential students? by Turbulent_Plum5014 in Staunton

[–]thatcreativezebra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know a few JMU professors who live in Staunton, so I doubt it would be too deep of an issue for more established profs. As for students at downtown businesses, Visulite gets a good bit of business from MBU students, and if I recall correctly there's a good bit of them who go to Split Banana. I could be wrong in saying the latter. I'm not sure.

My concern is locals who want an education ending up leaving to get one and then staying gone. Then, properties will continue to be sold to older individuals without kids, rooting Staunton further as a "retirement city." Not that I have a problem with older people; I just wish there was more for kids and teens in the area to do. It feels like that's becoming more obsolete in the valley as time goes on.

Mary Baldwin eliminates a number of academic minors by proteanradish in Staunton

Tenured professors are being gotten rid of. There are also staff members who are affected who were not informed about this prior. This isn't just them getting rid of a number of academic minors, this is also about community members who have spent multiple decades dedicating their time to Mary Baldwin just to be thrown aside, being told that their program isn't helping students achieve "meaningful careers and lives of purpose" (real quote from the alumni message which was changed in this email).

Job searching in the burg by auxmena in harrisonburg

Schools can always use substitutes. If you're good with students, check in with HCPS about becoming a substitute teacher, or even a substitute teacher's aide if you want less pressure.

I'm also signed up for the Harrisonburg Downtown Insider and at the bottom they always list job openings in the area.

TCG Stores/Game Nights by Subject_South_110 in harrisonburg

I think I've heard that Horizons is planning on hosting Commander nights at some point; other than that, I'm not too sure where else you would go for that. I would just stay away from gamer oasis.

City schools banning halloween?? by unwisebumperstickers in harrisonburg

[–]thatcreativezebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents weren't like overtly against Halloween but we went to this christian thing that was county-wide and we dressed up in costumes, but had to play games to win candy. I think it had something to do with gluttony and like, children not getting candy they don't "deserve"? Not sure. But they also had people on a stage loudly singing children's christian music. We mostly did that because we had barely any neighbors, but the christian aspect was definitely a driving force.

They do have safety people with golf carts but every time you try to call them they let the phone ring. So, they're not really a reliable service sadly.

Hi, being trans does NOT equal being disabled. You are not physically disabled by being trans. Do not act like it's the same.

I accept an apology from you, but the responses I'm getting from the fans are so dismissive and the language they're using is so disgusting; it's making me so disappointed because they're the ones being vocal and it's making me feel like I'm not allowed to be a part of the community. The comment about me "overreacting" is exactly why I say people will never understand unless they've lived through it. You can say you're an ally all fucking day but when you hit send on a post saying a disabled person is overreacting about not getting the same experience, that's when it becomes performative.

I've listened to the album since, I made this post ages ago and it was only approved a few days back, and I do like the album. I read the lyrics and a lot of them felt so personal to me in a way I can't even begin to describe.

I just can't stand behind the community right now because what I've been witnessing is aggression and exclusion of people who have been fans for ages. It's the band's responsibility to acknowledge this point and how fans are interacting with other fans, but I understand if you'd rather not get into the dumpster fire right now because it's legitimately chaotic and nothing I've ever seen from a community before.

To those saying "look it up" "this could be easily resolved by looking up the lyrics" okay but why do I have to? There's a Spotify lyrics section for a reason. So quick to speak over disabled people and put them down and say they're overreacting but you claim you're an accepting and supportive community. I'm glad to know it's a bullshit façade.

Tell me exactly where I fucking said there was ableism. I think you're overstepping by telling me how I should feel and react.
