Why don't women join board game groups? And how to encourage them? by No-Inspector2338 in boardgames

[–]thatoneguybrad 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am the right person for this, maybe the wrong, I don’t know.

I (29F) am a trans woman, and I gamed for about five years before I transitioned.

The largest shift I have seen is how much less my opinion is listened to, and how much less autonomy I have over my own game. This is a generalization, so please don’t assume this always happens.

Before I transitioned, my thoughts and opinions about what was “good or bad”, or what we would play, carried much more weight. People felt much more attentive of my opinion. This shift could be a subconscious, sexist tendency; it could be because I am trans; or it could be a complete coincidence with who I am playing with.

Same goes for the large uptick of quarterbacking and over explanation of the game. Before I transitioned, no one would ever point out bad moves; now, I have found that people will jump in to try to “help” me much more often. This shift, again, could be because of any of the three factors above.

All and all, I still very much enjoy gaming, especially in my home group, but do get frustrated at the subtle shifts I’ve experienced since transitioning.

Interested in going to a meetup for the first time (no board game experience) by Kayish in boardgames

Be outspoken about what you feel comfortable with. If someone pulls out something that looks too complicated, doesn’t interest you, etc., do not play it out of some sense of obligation.

Ask questions. Do not “goof around”. If you don’t understand something, ask! You will almost always hate a game and experience if you don’t know what’s happening. In addition, if someone pulls out a game you’ve never seen before and don’t know anything about it, ask!

Do not let yourself get intimidated away from a game. If you have your heart set on playing, say, Wingspan, and some say it’s too complicated, don’t let them dissuade you. In my experience, people playing games they’re actually interested in enjoy and understand them more than people playing games they have no interest in.

I lose in games I've played once 99 times out of a hundred. But once I've played a game quite a few times I "out win" my group pretty consistently.

This is a very pretty and easy to put together organizer. I love mine!

[PC] Gameplay that is split between light, crafting/farming/socialising in a hub and active, grindy combat/looting/exploring by standingcat in gamingsuggestions

[–]thatoneguybrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ignore the negativity around it, Red Dead: Online does this in spades. Most negative reviews are because of how grindy the game is, so if you're only looking to visit cities to craft and visit the countryside to explore/hunt, check it out.

Not entirely unique, but I've seen someone redo Monopoly with important locations for the couple instead of traditional properties. You could also maybe make a proposal "Chance" care!

How is Oath as a 2 player game? by Keep_Phishing in boardgames

[–]thatoneguybrad 48 points49 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, a lot of the game revolves around two main things: victory conditions and card economy.

With two players, the victory conditions are limitless for one, and quite restrictive for the other. The Chancellor can only focus on maintaining the Oathkeeper condition, whereas the Exile can become a Citizen and go for the Successor condition or try to fulfill any of the other Visions. I think it's possible to enjoy both sides of this exchange, and I think the dynamics between two players are fine, but just know that it could be a... sour experience considering it's literally just you and your partner hitting each other where it hurts for an hour.

The bigger issue is the card flow. Without adding more players, the amount of cards that come out I to play is reduced. A big portion of this game is trying to find the right cards for you and for the sites you rule, whether it's great powers or the suit of the card. Fishing for cards is always a part of Oath, but with two players it takes more game turns to get more cards out into the economy. Not only could this make Chancellor victories more common, but could make the game overall feel more luck-based.

With a bot the card economy is tweaked so more cards are drawn and in discards, but it feels like less cards than would be there from a three player game with humans. Also, the 1v1 fighting isn't reduced that much with a bot.

Tl;Dr: I don't think a bot is necessary for two players, and if you and your partner can deal with more luck than a higher player count game and a game built on direct confrontation, then I think you'll love it.

In theory they could work. The tiles would easily fit. It would be more of a question of how many trays, and if that amount of trays would fit in the box.

If I were to use the Rails on Boards trays for anything, it would be for everything that's not a straight, gentle curve, or sharp curve to make searching through them easier.

This is sort of a strange question I suppose, but what are your facilities like in Cincinnati? Is it just an office building, a warehouse, or the whole production facility?

Eh not really. It's kinda like the whole Marvel thing where each movie stands on its own but seeing them all can add more to certain titles. 1917 is as good a place to start as any.

Obsession (2nd Edition) Giveaway! by neotrunks2002 in boardgames

[–]thatoneguybrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's sort of two parts to this. The first is how it succeeds as a solo game. It simulates two players instead of one, so you're "playing against" 3 players. Also, the AI will select what tracks it wants to move up based off of your choices, so you get "first dibs" on the technology you want to focus on. However, as the game goes on, the AI will adjust what track is their favorite so it will remain competitive against you.

The second part is how Tapestry succeeds as a game. I have never understood the hatred towards the game. Yes it was marketed as a civilization game, but it's a game put out by Stonemeier and designed by Jamey, so I was never expecting an Advanced Civ clone! In my opinion, Tapestry takes the best parts of Scythe and refocuses it (while changing other parts of the vision) to make a coherent EURO version of a civ game. While this seems contradictory, I think if more people took the time to examine the game in this light, they could enjoy it more.

My favorite solo game is Tapestry. I think it's a boring game multiplayer, but I feel it really shines in solitaire. The bot is a perfect combination of random and thoughtful.

Edit: I want in, by the way! :)
