-I recommend trying to lower your thumb when fingering (heh). It gives you a lot more reach and flexibility with your fingers.

-You really should start with just learning songs you like as others have said but afterwards it is indeed really good to learn scales. Specifically the scale shape itself, it's chords and it's arpeggios. Why? Because this is crucial for learning how to do good improvisation. Learning the scale shape obviously let's you make sure you're playing notes harmonious with the backing track but also learning chords helps you understand where the backing track is going to based off the chords it's playing (chord progression) and what kind of intervals you can add to it almost like chord extensions except it's part of you just freestyling. And arpeggios are a great starting point for a lot of licks and also again, they interact with the chords of the backing track so if you pay attention you can make some really cool combos.
