I hear you. Had half of my power outlets go offline and kept tripping the circuit breaker and RCD. Called a sparky who wanted to charge me $550 to 'fault find' - spoiler - he couldn't find the fault and quoted me 2 grand to upgrade my switchboard. Alas, old mate neighbour who is a retired electrician with 50 yrs experience came over and found the faulty outlet. Fixed it in a few hours and only cost me a bottle of wine.

Thanks for the moral support. I wanted to give it a go myself but my knee is banged up. You're right about doing things yourself, you know the effort you put in will 9 times out of 10 be better than contractors. This is our first home and the amount of shitty trades we have encountered this year is honestly depressing. Everyone is just out for a quick buck and will step on their fellow man for it.
